Discord announced today in a blog post that several creators will be invited to a new premium beta. Although Discord recently rolled out several new features to turn the platform into a community space, this premium membership will provide monetization options for users on the group messaging app.
Discord Will Offer Creators VIP Features With the New Premium Membership
Similar to the subscription system on Twitch, Discord will give server owners the option to create several tiers at different price points with their own incentives. This feature may include different tiers, extra server channels, chats and voice calls. Discord Nitro will remain a personal subscription with very little overlap with the planned new premium service. In the blog post, Discord commented, “Premium Memberships provide a modern and simple way to offer first-class experiences, content and interactions within your community. With a fast and seamless process, members can subscribe, get instant access to perks with payments, and it all happens directly in Discord.” Although premium membership for Discord is eventually expected to reach live servers, the company made clear that it is still in the “slow rollout” stage. Since Discord is gathering feedback on the product's potential, this will remain a closed experiment until the next announcement. The platform has not yet said which creators it is considering to test this new server feature with, or how many creators we can expect to see implementing the premium experience.
