When you buy a game somewhere like Amazon, you can use it on Steam with a code provided by the seller. The codes are 12 characters long and are pretty simple to use.

  • Launch Steam and find the option to redeem a code.
  • Once you're in Steam, go to the top of the client and look for the Games menu at the top. Click Activate a Product on Steam.
  • In the new window that opens, click Next, then accept the Steam subscriber agreement.
  • You'll get to a window where you can enter your Steam key. Press Next again to confirm.
  • The next window will let you install the game on your computer right away. You also have the option to cancel this step, which will still add the game to your account but won't install it immediately.
