Transferring characters from one server to another is a common feature in World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV and many other MMOs, and now it is available in Amazon's new open-world MMO, New World. When New World launched on September 27, 2021, it drew hundreds of thousands of players, but many ended up waiting hours in long server queues and then began wondering how the New World server transfer and character transfer work.
New World Server Transfer
Amazon is adding new servers and expanding the capacity of existing worlds after acknowledging the problems many players have experienced. In a statement on September 28, Amazon said, "Our sole focus right now is making sure everyone can log in and play quickly."
To make sure everyone can find an open world and join their friends in Aeternum, Amazon is offering all New World players the chance to "place" their characters on a new server for free.
New World Character Transfer
The character transfer is a free service that players will be able to use starting in October.
In a forum post on October 9, Amazon said, "Our team is working incredibly hard to test this feature [server transfers] and get it to a place where we are confident it will work exactly as intended. We want to make sure the process is smooth and ready for everyone to use, so you can find your long-term home in Aeternum as soon as possible."
Amazon has been testing the feature for several weeks and decided to take a "safe, incremental" approach to rolling out transfers to all players.
With the release of Patch 1.0.3 on October 19, the feature is now live in certain regions, including US East, Central Europe, US West and AP Southeast.
- To use it, players must first leave their Company, remove their active trading post sell and buy orders, travel to a refuge such as a settlement or outpost, and log out.
- After the transfer, players keep all of their character progress, including level, weapon mastery and titles, full inventory and storage, currencies, house and housing decorations, and all quest progress.
A second transfer will require an additional server transfer token. In the future, this will become a service that can be purchased from the game's store.
