Rust, a legend of its genre, is not as complicated and hard to play as you might think. Learning a few Rust tricks will be the key to survival, especially for those traveling in the wilderness for the first time. For this reason, we have shared 10 essential tips that we think will be useful to gamers just starting out in Rust on their adventures in the game.

Rust Beginner's Guide

1) Choose a Suitable Server

If you are a new Rust player, the first thing you need to do is choose a server that suits you. Most new players usually go to a high-population official server. However, these servers are full of experienced players. A newcomer needs time to gain experience. For this reason, you need to join a server that suits you.

To find a starter server that suits you, you can type something like 'beginner', 'friendly' or 'PvE only' into the box. Keep in mind that players can still kill you, but with a suitable server this is less likely.

2) Craft a Sleeping Bag to Get a Respawn Point

One of the first items you need in Rust is a sleeping bag. By placing a sleeping bag on the ground, you create a custom respawn point. Having one of them early will save you the trouble of respawning on the beach and having to walk all the way back.

However, hemp plants can escape your notice in the game. For this reason, look carefully at the image in front of you before starting your adventure in Rust.

3) Hit the Right Spot When Gathering Wood and Stone

After creating your first spawn point, start gathering stone and wood by hitting trees and large chunks of rock with your Rock (the starter tool). Remember that you need a Hatchet and a Pickaxe to craft your first specialized tools.

To do this as quickly as possible, try to hit the red X that will appear on the tree. If you hit the X with your Rock, you get more wood per hit. The same goes for the sparkle that appears on the rock. You can hit it to get more stone at once.

4) Prioritize Gathering Wood

After crafting the Hatchet and the Pickaxe, start gathering wood. Gather as much wood as you can. This resource is the only thing you need to build your first base. So do not waste time on other resources.

  • Building Plan
  • Foundation
  • Walls
  • Wooden Door
  • Key Lock
  • Campfire
  • Wood Storage Box

5) Choose the Right Spot for Your First Base

The location of your base has a big effect on your success in the game. Try to find a well-hidden spot with plenty of resources nearby, but do not walk more than necessary. Running around the middle of the map will not benefit you.

On the other hand, keep in mind that deserts are dangerous and snowy areas are not suitable for new players without clothing. It can also be a good idea to be close to roads and old towns to look for better materials.

6) Do Not Farm More Than You Need

Farming more than you need is perhaps the most common mistake players make in Rust. Although it is very tempting to gather a large amount of resources at once, you should not forget how frustrating dying is. What you should do is gather the small amount of resources you need right now and return them to your base regularly. This way you only gather what you need, and your risk of losing everything is greatly reduced.

Sometimes, when you run into a better-equipped player, the best thing you can do is go back to your base and hide. But on the one hand, this is risky. If you open the door and die, you could lose all the materials you have stored so far to the other player.

If an enemy player gets past the first one, they still cannot reach your stored items. Even if you know you are going to die, always remember to lock the door behind you first. Your stash is probably more valuable than the items on your body.

8) Avoid Lighting Fires at Night

The quickest way to make yourself a target for other players is to light a fire. So you had better stay in the dark.

9) Prevent Your Base from Decaying

Buildings do not stay intact forever. Your base will decay over time, and the only way to prevent this is to maintain the structure. First, you should build a tool cupboard from 1,000 wood and place it in your base. Then you should put a certain amount of the building materials you use into the cupboard. The bigger your base, the more upkeep it needs. (Keep this in mind before you start building your base.)

Now that you have a strong foundation, you should start visiting abandoned sites to gather more valuable materials. However, you should be careful on these visits. Exploring abandoned buildings can make you radioactive and leave you crawling until you die. Without protective clothing, you have no chance of recovering from radiation. If you see an old industrial site, keep your ears open. Do you hear a crackling sound? That means the buildings emit radiation. Turn around and run!
