The first game in the series was made in 1991 for the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) video game console, and the first step into the series was taken with the Sonic the Hedgehog video game, the film's namesake. Most Sonic the Hedgehog games have either been platform games or have been released for every type of console product, starting from the Sega Genesis up to the latest video game consoles.

The plot of every game is built around the famous hero Sonic the Hedgehog, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog. Interesting characters such as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog and the Chao creatures have also been supporting cast members of these series.
