Arkane Lyon could close: according to Le Monde, Microsoft is looking for a buyer or partner for the Marvel's Blade studio and may shut it down if none is found. Microsoft says it has extended the consultation period by a month.

Key facts

  • Studio: Arkane Lyon (Dishonored, DEATHLOOP, Marvel's Blade)
  • Original consultation deadline: November 13, 2026 (extended by one month)
  • Staff: 217 (Le Monde)
  • Legal framework: France's Florange Law requires a search for a buyer before closure
  • Marvel's Blade: announced December 7, 2023 at The Game Awards, published by Bethesda Softworks
  • Microsoft's position: closure documents are "not a final decision"

How did the Arkane Lyon process begin?

According to the Le Monde report covered by PC Gamer, Arkane Lyon management told staff on July 16, ten days after Xbox's major round of layoffs, that Xbox planned to close the studio. That round affected around 3,200 people. However, France's Florange Law requires companies with more than 1,000 employees to look for a buyer before closing a site, so a legal consultation process was started for the studio.

The documents include a closure plan

Documents signed in July and published on a French government site in August refer to the "complete and permanent cessation of the company's activities" and the "economic dismissal of all employees." In other words, if no buyer is found, closure is a real possibility.

Microsoft extends the deadline by a month

The consultation was originally due to end on November 13. According to Le Monde, the unions representing Arkane staff, Printemps Écologique and STJV (Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo), asked for more time for layoff negotiations and the search for a buyer, and the request was granted. A Microsoft spokesperson told PC Gamer the company has extended the consultation by a month and is exploring options, including a partner to support the studio through the development ahead. The spokesperson stressed that documents referring to closure are part of the mandatory consultation process and do not represent a final decision.

What happens to Marvel's Blade?

According to the December 7, 2023 announcement from Bethesda Softworks and Marvel Games, Marvel's Blade is a mature, single-player, third-person game developed by Arkane Lyon. It takes players to a quarantined section of Paris in the middle of a supernatural emergency. The game's page on Marvel.com lists Arkane Lyon as developer and Bethesda Softworks as publisher. No platforms or release date have been announced.

In the announcement, Marvel Games' Bill Rosemann said the team was excited to celebrate Blade's 50th anniversary with Arkane Lyon, and game director Dinga Bakaba and co-creative and art director Sebastien Mitton shared their thoughts on the project. PC Gamer reports that sources close to the studio say development is still years from completion. Arkane Lyon has 217 staff, and the studio's future will directly decide Blade's fate.

Why does Arkane Lyon matter?

With the Dishonored series and DEATHLOOP, Arkane Lyon became one of the most respected studios in the immersive sim genre. According to its Steam page, Dishonored 2 was released on November 11, 2016, developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The studio's systems-driven design, which gives players many ways through a level, is a big part of why Marvel's Blade drew so much interest.

Xbox's cuts reach beyond Arkane

The impact of Xbox's downsizing this year is wide:

  • Double Fine, Compulsion Games and Undead Labs were spun off as independent studios and soon made significant layoffs
  • Hellblade developer Ninja Theory appears to be closing entirely
  • Around 3,200 people lost their jobs in the July round

The news landing in the same week as BioWare's closure shows how far cost cutting at major publishers has gone. Bethesda is still backing big licensed games, such as its new Indiana Jones game, but Arkane Lyon's fate will become clearer in the coming weeks. For fans of Marvel's other games, such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Blade remains one of the most anticipated superhero projects.
