Plasma Cutter

The Plasma Cutter is the first weapon you will encounter in the game and in many ways one of the best weapons as well. Although some other weapons are better in certain respects, its fast rate of fire and the ability to rotate the Plasma Cutter's beam make it an extremely powerful, versatile weapon.

Pulse Rifle

The Pulse Rifle is another weapon found quite early and may initially seem like a weak option compared to the Plasma Cutter, but after investing in some upgrades it becomes quite a good weapon. Perhaps the most exciting thing about this automatic weapon is its secondary fire, which can release a proximity mine and lets you set some cowardly traps for the necromorphs. For that, your upgrades should focus on moving straight up the track so that you can drop a node in the Kinetic Autoloader (SP1) and greatly increase your rate of fire.

Contact Beam

The Contact Beam is found within the first few hours and is the most powerful weapon in the game in terms of raw damage output. You should use it against enemies you need to blast quickly with its powerful beam, then use its secondary fire (a powerful laser shot) to take down bosses. In terms of upgrades, also remember that you should prioritize capacity so you can use it for longer.

Line Gun

The Line Gun is a bit like the Plasma Cutter, but it focuses much more on crowd control because of its wide attack. It will quickly take out the legs of a standard necromorph pack or eliminate all three of a Lurker's bullet-firing tentacles in a single shot, so once you get this weapon, you should always keep it on you. Since it is needed to deal with groups of enemies, you should prioritize the upgrade path that gives it extra capacity and damage.

Force Gun

The Force Gun can be extremely powerful at extremely close range, which makes it a good choice. However, if you decide to upgrade the weapon, you should increase its damage as much as possible and start blasting.

Flamethrower

The Flamethrower does the job quickly against Swarmers, the small necromorphs that crawl on you and slow you down, but since other weapons can also deal with them well, it is not worth taking up a weapon slot for that alone. Still, if you decide to use the flamethrower, you should focus your attention on upgrading its capacity so you can keep taking down the aliens.

The Ripper

The Ripper is found quite early in the game, so it can be useful for a few chapters before you get better weapons. After you beef up your arsenal a bit, these gimmicky weapons are probably better left in storage. Some improvements to its damage can help make it viable when paired with stasis during close-range encounters, but also remember there are better options that can get the same results without the limitations.
