Even though the 4-4-2 is quite old-fashioned in the modern game, the 4-4-2 Holding formation does the job perfectly in FIFA 22 and gives you versatility in both defense and attack. Although it is arguably a more conservative formation, anchored by two CDMs and with a back four, if you can use your wide wingers to stretch the pitch, it will work for the direct attacks and wing plays you make on balls the opponent loses while attacking.

Especially if your wingers go forward to complete the attack, you can give your full-backs the "stay back while attacking" instruction.

There are a number of permutations of the 4-4-2 you can try, including the 4-2-2-2, a much more aggressive idea at the expense of width.

FIFA 22 Best Tactics: 4-4-2 Holding

Formation

4-4-2 Holding

Pros
  • A strong defense supported by two CDMs in the middle of midfield
  • Wingers can increase their effectiveness in attack by moving together and overlapping from the opposite flank
  • A flexible formation without many weaknesses
  • Since it plays with 2 strikers at the start of matches, a chance for an effective start and an early goal
Cons
  • Because midfielders stay close to defense, feeding the two strikers can be difficult, and with one of them helping the midfield, the numerical advantage up front can be lost.

4-4-2 Custom Tactics and Instructions

The traditional 4-4-2 is quite adaptable, meaning you can make it as attacking or defensive as you like with your Custom Tactics. But if you choose 4-4-2 Holding, you have a good chance of staying tight at the back. You should be quite safe in defense, but getting the ball out of the back can be quite laborious when you have possession, so we recommend choosing Long Ball as your Build Up Play style.

If you think you don't have enough options up front even with two strikers, you can give your LM and RM players the Cut Inside instruction, but you lose width that way and may need to instruct your LB and RB to Overlap to balance it. Be warned that this will leave you exposed in wide areas and will punish you if you face an opponent with fast wingers. We recommend instructing your full-backs to stay in position during attacks and trying to rely on the natural width provided by your wide midfielders:

Defense

  • Defensive Style: Balanced
  • Width: 50
  • Depth: 50

Attack

  • Build Up Play: Long Ball
  • Chance Creation: Balanced
  • Width: 55
  • Players in Box: 5
  • Corners: 2
  • Free Kicks: 2

With all this in mind, if you plan to use the 4-4-2 Holding formation, these may be the instructions you want to set for your players. As I have said many times before, after giving these instructions you should go into a match and experiment until you find what suits you best (for yourself). In such cases, go into the first match without tactics, then work out on the pitch what you want to do and go into the next match with those changes.
