How Do You Develop Left-Backs in FIFA 23?

First and foremost, the golden rule is playing them in most matches and getting good match ratings. While doing this, you shouldn't neglect the match itself. Focusing too much on developing the player alone, without thinking about the match, can actually hurt the player's development.

If you can't give your young talents enough playing time and there's a much better player ahead of them, send them out on loan and make sure they'll actually play at the club they go to. When sending players on loan, make sure you send them to a club where they'll play in the closing stages too — otherwise their development will be hindered again.

Decide on your player development plan. Development plans determine what kind of skills you want your player to develop for their role on your team.

Who Are the Best Potential Left-Backs in FIFA 23?

Just like in FIFA 22, we'll take a look at the highest-potential players in FIFA 23. Since we're looking at the highest-potential players, it's quite likely you'll recognize some familiar faces again. We apologize in advance to those who already know these players :)

FIFA 23 Potential Left-Backs

Álex Balde (68 RAT / 83 POT)

  • Club: FC Barcelona
  • Age: 18
  • Nationality: Spain
  • Price: £3.6M

A La Masia graduate, Álex Balde is already a fairly well-known player. Coming up through Barcelona's academy adds a bit of prestige to most players' names, but Balde has more than earned it. He's been playing for Spain internationally since he was 15, and plays left-back.

Calling Alex Balde fast would be an understatement, so I'll say insanely fast. If an opponent gets past him once, they shouldn't celebrate — they might suddenly see him again right in front of them. He more than makes up for his lack of physical strength with his technical ability. His dribbling is excellent, so it's no surprise he's at one of football's best academies.

If you need a left-footed playmaker to hold down your back position, Álex Balde is a great choice!

Adrien Truffert (74 RAT / 83 POT)

  • Club: Stade Rennais FC
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: France
  • Price: £10.8M

The first Frenchman on our list, Adrien Truffert is also plenty strong defensively thanks to his outstanding dribbling ability. He currently plays for Stade Rennais in his home country of France, and wears the shirt for France's youth national teams. At this rate, we shouldn't be surprised to see him in the senior national team soon.

Adrien Truffert has already made a very exciting start to his career.

Truffert has become Rennes' undisputed left-back, and it's highly likely he'll dominate the position for years to come. He's among the best candidates for anyone looking for a left-back in FIFA Career Mode.

Quentin Merlin (67 RAT / 84 POT)

  • Club: FC Nantes
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: France
  • Price: £4.5M

Next up is a magician with excellent ball control, and his name is Quentin Merlin.

He takes the 8th spot on our list thanks to his huge potential. Merlin is another French left-back who has played international matches at the youth level. He currently plays for FC Nantes in France, contributing to his team with deadly crosses and expertly timed tackles.

There's no left-back quite as good as Quentin Merlin. A player with Europa League experience, Merlin pressures opponents defensively with his strength while also helping his team push forward in attack.

If you need a magician to bring the attack from the back, Quentin Merlin is exactly the kind of left-back wonder that FIFA Career Mode needs.

Devyne Rensch (73 RAT / 84 POT)

  • Club: Ajax
  • Age: 19
  • Nationality: Netherlands
  • Price: £7.2M

A veteran of the top-potential wonderkids lists, Devyne Rensch has been known for his promise and potential for some time now. Despite being on wonderkids lists for years, this brilliant kid is still only 19, and could genuinely reach the heights of some old greats.

Devyne Rensch is a Dutch defender playing for world-famous club Ajax in his home country. He's one of the fastest players on this list and has made a habit of winning the ball back from opponents! Rensch will be the first choice for anyone among these potential left-backs who needs defensive solidity, with the kind of ability that puts you 1-2 steps ahead defensively.

At just 19 years old, Rensch is a great choice for FIFA Career Mode managers looking to invest in the future!

Piero Hincapié (76 RAT / 84 POT)

  • Club: Bayer 04 Leverkusen
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: Ecuador
  • Price: £15.3M

The first South American on this list, Piero Hincapié is one to watch. He's an Ecuadorian playing for German club Bayer Leverkusen, and his pace is his biggest weapon!

Piero Hincapié already has enough European experience playing in the Europa League to move to bigger clubs. He scored his first goal for Leverkusen in a 4-0 win over Scottish club Celtic in the Europa League.

Hincapié is a fast, defensive tank — wingers trying to attack down his flank quickly learn not to bother trying to get past him. If you're looking for an expert at winning back the ball, grab him while he's still just 19!

Aaron Hickey (73 RAT / 85 POT)

  • Club: Brentford FC
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: Scotland
  • Price: £16.2M

The first player on our list gracing the Premier League, Aaron Hickey is an exciting young talent to say the least. A Scot with 4 caps for his country, Hickey is bound to be recognized by every football fan sooner or later.

Aaron Hickey has already had what many would call career-defining moments. He scored his first big goal against Hibernian, then his fierce rival in Scotland, in an exciting derby! After breaking through, he transferred to Serie A side Bologna, and from there Brentford opened his path to the Premier League.

Hickey is known for his pace, defensive positioning, and stamina. If you want a player who's basically a third lung down your left flank, Hickey is exactly for you!

Rayan Aït-Nouri (76 RAT / 86 POT)

  • Club: Wolverhampton Wanderers
  • Age: 21
  • Nationality: France
  • Price: £19.8M

Another left-back playing in the English Premier League, Rayan Aït-Nouri is a 21-year-old left-back with very high potential. Before being bought by Wolves, he went on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers from French club Angers SCO. Wolves' management and fans love him, and it's not hard to see why. He may not be the strongest left-back on this list, but he makes up for his lack of strength with his high work rate and excellent ball control.

Rayan Aït-Nouri is another player who managed to score in his first match, a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Internationally, he's played for France's youth teams at both U18 and U21 level. (that's a lot of Frenchmen, huh!!!)

Aït-Nouri is only 21 and has already made a good start for a club competing in one of the world's best leagues. If you want a bit of experience in your FIFA Career Mode and are willing to start with a fairly low rating, Rayan is the right choice.

Nuno Mendes (80 RAT / 88 POT)

  • Club: Paris Saint-Germain
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: Portugal
  • Price: £36M

Already a well-known player, Nuno Mendes started making a name for himself at Sporting and has cemented himself as a promising back in Paris. A regular for one of Europe's biggest giants, PSG, Nuno Mendes has been on watchlists for some time. Playing alongside teammates like Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi, Mendes looks set to keep developing.

Nuno Mendes is certainly fast, and thanks to his huge stamina reserves, he attacks up and down the left side of the pitch throughout the whole match. It's no surprise Paris Saint-Germain paid 38 million euros to sign him!

If you're an established team with plenty of money to spend and want an agile, balanced attacking back, get Nuno Mendes!

Joško Gvardiol (81 RAT / 89 POT)

  • Club: RB Leipzig
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: Croatia
  • Price: £31.5M

Let me start with my own personal take here. He's one of my picks for the best future centre-back and left-back prospect, and especially as a centre-back, he might not have a better in 2-3 years.

Given the interest from Chelsea and English champions Manchester City, it's not surprising why the world has Joško Gvardiol on its radar. At just 20 years old, he's the kind of player you could entrust your left side to for potentially over a decade. He's currently playing for RB Leipzig, a club with consistent success in the Champions League and their domestic league.

If you don't grab Joško Gvardiol for your FIFA Career Mode squad, someone else definitely will.

Alphonso Davies (84 RAT / 89 POT)

  • Club: Bayern Munich
  • Age: 21
  • Nationality: Canada
  • Price: £63M

We've reached the end of the road, folks :)

One of Canada's rare talents, Alphonso Davies has won the world's heart with his humility and earned everyone's admiration with his overwhelming ability. Davies is a puzzle of a player — he can already be the best at the world-class level he's at, and he still has the potential to get even better! With pace reminiscent of a Ferrari, Davies isn't just the best left-back on this list — he could be the best left-back in the world.

The Ferrari comparison wasn't a coincidence — hardly any player even tries to beat him one-on-one, because he's simply too athletic!

Alphonso Davies is one of the most indispensable players for German champions Bayern Munich, if you want to add his world-class talent to your FIFA Career Mode... snap him up!
