Final Fantasy 16 Release Date and Platforms (2022 Preview)

One of the most exciting upcoming PS5 games, Final Fantasy 16 is a sprawling open-world RPG set in a fantasy world torn apart by war, and its original trailer left many fans with question marks. Let's find the answers to those questions together.

When Will Final Fantasy 16 Release?

Square Enix hasn't made an official announcement about the game's release date yet. Despite promising updates late in 2021, the ongoing global crisis threw those plans off track. In a statement on December 27, producer Naoki Yoshida said new "complications have delayed the game's development by almost a year."

However, director Hiroshi Takai told fans their patience would be rewarded: "I've faced countless challenges on our journey to bring you the sixteenth entry in the storied Final Fantasy series. And although we're pouring our hearts and souls into this project every single day, it may take us a bit of time to get it into your hands. I promise, it'll be worth the wait!"

Which Platforms Will Final Fantasy 16 Be Available On?

Despite the first trailer showing a PC version, Square Enix has stated that Final Fantasy 16 will be exclusive to PS5 systems at launch. It looks like PC and Xbox Series X|S owners will have to wait longer to see whether the game comes to more platforms. While that's disappointing for Xbox and PC owners, it's worth remembering that a number of Square Enix games have eventually made their way to those platforms in the past. For now, though, Final Fantasy XVI looks set to stay on PS5.
