After confirming that your AirTag needs a new battery, here is how to open its case and install a new one.

  • Press down firmly on the stainless steel part of your AirTag and turn the cover counterclockwise while applying pressure. Most people find it easiest to hold the AirTag with both hands and use their thumbs both to apply pressure and to turn.
  • Pull the cover off the AirTag. It should come off easily; if it doesn't, make sure there is no adhesive left on the edges. You can also use a thin tool to lift it carefully.
  • Remove the CR2032 lithium 3V coin cell battery and insert your new battery with the negative side facing down. When done correctly, you will hear a chime indicating the battery is connected.
  • Put the cover back on, making sure the three alignment tabs are correctly positioned over the slots on the AirTag base. Turn the cover clockwise to lock it in place.
