How to Report a User on Discord

Discord is a great way to interact with your gaming friends for free through voice and text chat, but sometimes someone will say something in chat that violates the guidelines. Depending on how serious the message is, you may decide to report the user directly to Discord so disciplinary action can be taken. However, it's not as simple as it first appears. In this article, we'll walk you through how to report someone on Discord.

How Do You Report a User on Discord?

There are steps you need to take to successfully report someone who is harassing, spamming, threatening, or otherwise abusing others in chat. You might also see an entire server engaging in harmful activity that violates the community guidelines. Here's what you can do to alert Discord's moderators.

Check Whether the Message Violates Discord's Guidelines

You don't want to report someone unless their messages genuinely violate Discord's community guidelines. Activities and messages that aren't tolerated on Discord include:

• Harassment
• Spam messages
• Violating IP rights
• Sharing child sexual abuse material
• Glorifying or encouraging suicide and self-harm
• Threatening another user
• Sharing images of animal cruelty

If their messages don't fall into one of these categories, you probably shouldn't report them directly to Discord. Instead, if possible, talk to other members of the channel about their behavior. If you're the server owner or a moderator, you can kick and/or ban them yourself. You can also block or mute the user so you no longer see their content while still seeing what everyone else in the server is saying.

Please note: If the message is deleted after you submit your report, disciplinary action can still be taken. However, there's no way to report a message that's already been deleted.

Turn on Developer Mode, Find the Relevant ID Codes, and Submit a Report

At least not in the desktop app, you can't simply press a "report" button on Discord. Instead, you need to find a few ID codes that Discord's team can use to look into the offending messages. Follow these steps to file a report on Discord:

• Click the Gear icon next to your name in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
• Select the Appearance tab.
• Scroll down to the Advanced section of this page. You'll see a toggle labeled Developer Mode — turn it on.
• To get three different ID codes, go to the message in question and right-click directly on the username.
• Select Copy ID.
• Paste the number you copied somewhere and label it "user ID" or something similar. The ID will stay the same even if the user changes their username.
• Right-click on the message itself and select Copy ID once again. This time, you'll get an ID number for the message and channel. Paste it and label it "message ID" like you did with the other one.
• Go to the server icon on the left side of your screen and right-click on it.
• Select Copy ID a third time and paste it along with the other two.
• Label it "server ID" or something similar.
• Submit your report.
