The new Emerald rank sits between Platinum and Diamond. It was introduced to fix what Riot describes as a "very bottom-heavy distribution of ranks." Statistics from the last few seasons show that more than 60 percent of players remain between Bronze and Silver, which Riot does not much like.
Instead, Riot wants those ranked between Iron (the lowest on the competitive ladder) and Silver to be regularly below average.
The Emerald rank was added as a way to flatten the curve without negatively affecting Diamond-ranked players. It will sit between the Platinum and Diamond ranks and is expected to have a percentage of players similar to old Platinum.
