LoL Worlds 2022 Tournament Format Revealed

The League of Legends World Championship is coming up soon, so it's time to explain the tournament format so everyone's on the same page. Let's go over the different stages and which teams you can expect to see.

Play-In Stage

The first part of the World Championship is the Play-In Stage. Twelve teams compete for the final four spots at the Main Event, which will take place in New York. In this stage, teams are split into two groups of six. Each team will play one match against every other team in its group. The teams that finish first in each group advance, while the other teams have to fight for the remaining spots. The third- and fourth-place teams will play a best-of-five against the second-place team from the opposite group to determine who advances. The winners of these matches also move on to the Main Event and the Group Stage.

Group Stage

The four teams we just mentioned made it through to the next stage, right? Well, now it's time to place them into groups. No two teams from the same region can be in the same group, so teams will be added accordingly.

Once that's done, we have four groups of four teams each, for a total of 16 teams. In the Group Stage, we'll play two rounds of matches. Every team in a group plays every other team twice. The first- and second-place teams from each group move on to the next stage of Worlds, the Knockout Stage.

Knock - Out Stage

Now, in the final part of the tournament, we have a single elimination bracket for the tournament's final eight teams. This part of the League of Legends World Championship consists of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. The last team standing will be crowned League of Legends World Champion. Ready for the tournament? We already are, and we're sending our endless best wishes to Türkiye's representative, Denizbank Wildcats, who will start out in the Play-In Stage.
