Here are some tactics you can apply as a counter to opponents playing a five-man midfield in OSM:

OSM Counter Tactic vs 5-Man Midfield Opponents 2024: Why 442A Against a Five-Man Midfield?

Our latest tactic was designed to be used against opponents playing a five-man midfield. These opponents usually get good results using 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formations. That's why we chose the 442A formation. The reason we picked this formation is that we've tested it and gotten successful results. We can say it's especially effective against opponents playing a five-man midfield.

When building your defensive setup, if you have four centre-backs available, we recommend using all four as centre-backs. Instead of using full-backs, you should build your entire back line out of centre-backs. However, if you only have three centre-backs available, you can still apply this tactic with three.

For example, if you're playing as Manchester United, go with high-stat centre-backs like Lindelöf. However, some players might not fit. For example, if players like Varane or Evans aren't suitable, don't feel forced to field a 73-rated player. You need at least three good centre-backs.

In midfield, definitely use one of your right- or left-sided players in the No. 10 position. If you don't have a good right- or left-attacking midfielder, build both flanks with No. 10-type players. This is a good spot for players like Mason Mount. In the centre, you should use your highest-performing players.

Forward Setup

You can turn one of your forwards into a winger. Marcus Rashford is one of the game's meta players, and you can pair him with Erling Haaland. One of your forwards should be defensively strong. For example, Rashford has a 41 defending rating while Haaland has 9. While one scores goals, the other should take on a role supporting the midfield.

Game Plan and Tactics

In our game plan, we should adopt a strategy built around using the flanks. We time our tackles based on the referee. Our forwards will hold their position while our midfielders will sit deeper. With this tactic, since the opponent plays with five in midfield and we're missing a midfielder ourselves, we keep four players back to avoid problems in our defensive line, and look for goals with our forward pairing.

Sliders and Final Settings

For the sliders, we'll set our press to 60, our style to 59, and our tempo to 65. We're playing a bit more boldly, but you can lower your style down to around 50. We use zonal marking and don't use an offside trap.

Alternative: 442B Formation

You can use this same tactic with the 442B formation as well. If your team leans more toward a passing game, you can go with 442B instead. In that case, you can push the sliders up a bit higher. Press can be 60-65, style 59, and tempo 70. If your team suits 442B better than 442A, try it this way.
