OSM Tactics Against Strong Opponents 2024: Underdog Strategies: The 5311 Formation

In this article, you'll learn how to take points off the league's strongest teams with the 5311 tactic. We've recommended this tactic often in our older content too, because it really works well in the current game. If you haven't tried it yet, we highly recommend it.

The defensive line plays a critical role in the 5311 formation. When the opponent is far stronger than you, playing attacking football won't make sense. That's why you need to keep your defensive line solid. If your team is weak, you should pick centre-backs and full-backs with strong defending. These players may be ineffective in attack, but they're quite reliable in defense.

You should have one CDM and two CAMs in midfield. For the CDM, pick a player with strong defending. Of the two CAMs, you can go with one balanced and one more attack-minded. For example, you could pick a player with strong defending like Balea. Up front, pick winger-type players with strong defending. Players like Mitoma or Fati are quite suitable for this position.

In this tactic, we'll use zonal marking and won't use the offside trap. On weak teams, especially if you have one or two star players, try to give these players captaincy, penalty, and free-kick duties. That way, you can build the game around them.

In the sliders section, we'll apply a defense-focused tactic. You could compare this tactic to Mourinho's defensive strategies. Our goal should be to keep pressing between 7 and 13, leaving the opponent little space. If your team is very weak, keep pressing at 7. If you're a bit better, you can go up to 13, but it's best not to go above that value.

Tempo and Style

We should build slowly by keeping tempo between 29 and 37. Since the opponent is much stronger than us, these values will help us keep the game under control. We'll boost defensive security by using zonal marking and not using the offside trap.

Key Men and Player Selection

Especially if you have a few star players on your team, give them captaincy, penalty, and free-kick duties. These players will form the backbone of the team.
