Pokémon Legends Z-A: Release Date, Story and Platforms

Pokémon Legends: Z-A was announced yesterday at the Pokémon Day: Pokémon Presents event. With Pokémon Legends: Z-A, we're returning to a city familiar from past Pokémon games but reimagined! The game is currently in development. Let's take a close look at when Pokémon Legends: Z-A is coming, what its story is, and which platforms it will be on!

When Will Pokémon Legends Z-A Release?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is planned to launch worldwide simultaneously in 2025. While the trailer shows the game coming to Nintendo Switch, we'll have to wait to see whether Pokémon Legends Z-A releases as part of the long-rumored Switch successor.

What Is the Story?

The game is set in Lumiose City in the Kalos region, which we first explored in Pokémon X and Y in 2013. The first trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A shows old architectural drawings transforming into a futuristic world. The city appears to be undergoing a modern transformation, but as we can see from the tower, it retains its Parisian influences.

According to the official trailer description, "an urban redevelopment plan is underway to make the city a place for both people and Pokémon." There are very few story details to go on for now, but the icon shown at the 1:51 mark of the reveal trailer suggests that Mega Evolutions will be making a comeback.

The ZA title may also be a nod to the mysterious AZ from Pokémon X and Y. If we recall his story, he feels deep guilt for having created the ultimate weapon. He had created it in order to revive the Pokémon Floette.

The design of the 'Z' and 'A' in this game's logo is also reminiscent of Zygarde, one of the Legendary Pokémon from Generation 6. Zygarde is a fairly interesting Pokémon because of its three forms: a 10% dog-like form, a 50% snake-like form, and a 100% humanoid form. The designs of the forms carry traces of Norse mythology.

This will be the series' first major release since 2022, which began with Legends: Arceus and ended with Violet and Scarlet. Both of those releases came out on Switch. So we can get a sense of whether the game will come to Nintendo Switch, but there's no confirmed information yet. We'll see whether Pokémon Legends Z-A can live up to Pokémon fans' expectations.
