Rise of Kingdoms being this popular is no accident. The developers have kept the game evolving for years. One of the biggest updates in recent years has been commanders wearing equipment. This update focuses on a question that especially confuses new players: How Are Crystal Keys Used in Rise of Kingdoms? We've also covered how to earn gold in the game.

As you keep playing Rise of Kingdoms, one of the strategy genre's deepest and most entertaining games, you'll notice the game gets deeper the more you play. You might think you fully understand the game in the first few hours, but don't let that fool you. After spending about four weeks in the game, you'll reach City Hall level 16, which unlocks the Blacksmith. From that point on, you'll be able to use Crystal Keys.

What Are Crystal Keys in Rise of Kingdoms?

Aside from the small, temporary keys that appear in events, there are three main keys in Rise of Kingdoms in total: Silver Key, Golden Key, and Crystal Key. With these three keys you can open Silver Chests, Golden Chests, and Equipment Chests. Today we're talking about the third key, so let's not waste time and get started.

Crystal Keys will help you open the Equipment Chest, which you can use in the mid and late game. In this chest you'll find blueprints for items your commanders can wear and the materials needed for them. However, to open this chest and use the keys, you need to upgrade your City Hall to level 16. In other words, if you're not spending any money, you'll need to be active in the game for about a month.

As with all games that have this mechanic, the drop chance of the items in the chest varies. Higher-value items drop less often, while you'll find plenty of ordinary items. Here are the drop chances for the items in Rise of Kingdoms' Equipment Chest:

You won't find these keys in the early parts of the game. The Equipment Chests found in the Tavern won't appear until level 16, but if you work hard and reach that level, you'll be able to make your commanders even stronger.

How Are Crystal Keys Used in Rise of Kingdoms?

If you've been stockpiling Crystal Keys, don't worry — once you reach level 16, you can easily use them by heading to the Tavern. With these keys, open Equipment Chests just like you open Silver and Golden Chests. The rewards you get from them will help you craft the items we're about to explain.

If you don't have any Crystal Keys or have used them all, there are three ways to get more:

• • • Complete daily quests and earn them as rewards.
    • Open Supply Crates you can win in events.
    • Buy them from the Store by spending gems. (We don't recommend this — you'll have to spend more than they're worth.)

There's no need to be too impatient about Crystal Keys. While they're an important part of the game, they're not among the most crucial mechanics. So don't spend too much time or money trying to get and open equipment chests.

What do the materials and blueprints you get with these keys do? From level 16 onward, you can build the Blacksmith. There, if you have enough materials, you can craft items that give your commanders extra power. These extra powers usually aren't significant enough to change the fate of major battles, but you can expect all commanders playing for victory to have the best gear.
