If you find yourself spending more and more time planning your lovely farm layout in Stardew Valley, you have plenty of company. But personalizing your home and expanding your farm takes a lot of labor, which sometimes leads to new challenges. Clay, for example, is used in several important building and farming crafts, but you cannot buy or make it, so it can be hard to find when you need it most. Fortunately, there are still plenty of natural ways to get clay, especially if you are ready to take a trip into the wilderness. Here is what you need to do to get clay in Stardew Valley.

How Do You Find Clay in Stardew Valley?

  • Till the soil you want to farm, or the sand in caves, beaches and so on. You will need a hoe to till, but the basic hoe is a starter tool (and can easily be upgraded to affect more ground). Tilling can reveal various resources, including clay. Pay close attention to tiles guaranteed to produce artifacts, with small wiggling stalks/worms in them. These spots have a chance of producing clay - in fact, the chance seems higher than for many other types of resources.
  • Go to the Ginger Island Dig Site. In the northern part of the island, near the Field Office, you will find a broken bridge that you can repair with 10 Golden Walnuts. Take the bridge to the Dig Site and look for brown Clay Nodes as you explore the area.
  • Open geodes. You can find geodes in various places, but they are most common in the mines. Blacksmiths can break them (or you can build your own crusher), and they can yield various artifacts, including clay.
  • Receive clay as a gift. This can happen during the "Secret Santa" stage of the Feast of the Winter Star, where a villager is assigned to give you a gift. If your villager turns out to be Vincent or Jas, there is a chance they will gift you some clay. It is not the best gift, but at least there are plenty of things you can do with it.

What Do You Do With Clay in Stardew Valley?

Clay is a basic resource used in a wide variety of crafts, from important building items to the odds and ends you might want to collect. Here are some of the things you can make with your clay (and other materials).

  • Quality Retaining Soil: This soil can be added to tilled soil to help increase the chance that the soil stays watered overnight, so you do not need to spend as much time watering. It is an important upgrade when you start building out your farm.
  • Deluxe Retaining Soil: This soil is guaranteed to retain water overnight, and it is an important step when you are ready to create premium farmland.
  • Garden Pots: You can plant various crops in or outside of these.
  • Brick Floors: These look nice.
  • Fiber Seeds: This seed mix can be planted at any time and does not need watering.
  • Bone Mills: You can grind bones with these to create fertilizer.
  • Silos: Silos are where you store grass as hay. This is an important addition as you grow your farm and want to start caring for multiple cows.
  • Shirts: It sounds odd, but you will need to use some clay when making a sewing machine, so keep this in mind if you are on the hunt for a shirt. Clay is also an ingredient that can be turned into orange dye in dye pots.
  • Completing fish pond quests: After catching a certain number of fish in a fish pond, a quest pop-up may appear asking you to feed a certain type of fish, which lets the pond's fish supply grow. Clay is an item requested by some species, especially shellfish.
