Before moving on to the best MMORPG Metaverse games to play in 2022: World of Warcraft is one of the world's most popular MMORPGs. It was developed by Blizzard Entertainment and has been active since 2004. Back then, like many kids, a young boy in Canada named Vitalik Buterin was a WoW fan and very keen on games.
At some point in 2010, he discovered that one of his valuable characters in the game had suddenly been nerfed. No warning, no message, no permission. The character had suddenly become weaker. As Vitalik mentions in his biography, he went to sleep and "realized what horrors centralized services could bring."
Years later he founded Ethereum, and here we are today...
Events like the one above have been a catalyst for the growth of Web3 games, permissionless environments where players presumably own in-game assets and identities. Many of these games have immersive virtual worlds, sometimes called the Metaverse. Thanks to wallet login, a feature of Web3, these spaces are no longer silos in terms of portability of property.
This raises the possibility of seamless economies, and so allows in-game trading with minimal counterparty risk. These blockchain-based games are available on Ethereum, Solana, BSC (Binance Smart Chain), Tron and many other chains.

Many Web2 games created unofficial gray markets for skins, assets and characters. In Web3, all of these markets are on-chain and therefore quite transparent. Players can buy and sell assets in the form of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) and in-game currencies in the form of cryptocurrencies (which can be swapped).
These liquid markets, in turn, enable earning opportunities, and hence the term Play-to-Earn (or P2E) or, as Eva Wu of Mechanism Capital put it, "the financialization of fun."
Even the smallest building blocks of these games can be sold for very large sums later. Some of these games also integrate DeFi (Decentralized Finance) elements, giving rise to the portmanteau GameFi. There are multiple ways to earn while playing.
In countries like the Philippines, P2E games such as Axie Infinity have become viable career options for many players who support their families with earnings from the platform. Although recent reports suggest the average earnings in the country have fallen below the minimum wage, this figure fluctuates from time to time, and more P2E games with improved tokenomics are emerging as possible alternatives.
The token markets for these games imitate real-world financial markets in volume and frequency. For example, the price of SAND, the native token of The Sandbox Game, recently rose after a possible tie-up attempt by Adidas. This is similar to the share price of a company rising in anticipation of a big partnership deal.

Although almost everyone in the P2E space is already aware of big names like Axie Infinity, Gods Unchained and The Sandbox, there are many new games with unique offerings that are equally interesting, if not more so. Here are a few P2E MMORPG games to look forward to!
Metaverse Games 2022: Magic Craft (1)
Magic Craft is a cross-platform "battle and conquer" MMORPG developed on BSC and powered by the Unity game engine. A unique feature of Magic Craft is that it offers a free-to-play mode alongside its P2E mode.
In scale and gameplay, Magic Craft is the kind of game that can take on popular titles like World of Warcraft and League of Legends on the Web3 platform. What makes this game different is that Magic Craft Metaverse uses blockchain technology, equipped with unique features not found on centralized MMORPG platforms.
The user's main goal here is to form clans and team up with other players to fight rival clans. There are 7 powerful castles built by the Elders. Every week each clan fights for ownership of the castles, and the Kings collect taxes from the empire as a reward.
Taxes are paid through $MCRT, the in-game currency, a multi-chain token that governs the Magic Craft economy. $MCRT is also the ecosystem's governance token and will let stakeholders take part in the platform's future development. The $MCRT ICO (initial coin offering) is planned for Q4 2021.
Magic Craft also offers other game modes such as P2P battles, quests, guild wars and tournaments. Players take part in battles through in-game characters known as Heroes. Each Hero is issued as an NFT and comes with a unique set of powers and abilities. All of these Heroes can be improved by equipping them with items such as weapons, armor and spells, which are also issued as NFTs.
When users win battles, the participating Heroes level up while users earn $MCRT tokens and other in-game items. A higher Leaderboard rank leads to bigger rewards. Players can also stake their Heroes, weapons and armor and earn $MCRT as a reward.

Heroes and other accessories can be bought and sold on Magic Craft's NFT "Marketplace". The marketplace also provides a platform for digital asset collectors who can buy and rent NFTs without joining the game. Virtual lands and castles are also available on the market.
As for game modes, users can initially choose free mode or P2E mode. In the free-to-play mode, users are offered Free Heroes to start their journey in the Metaverse, while users who choose P2E mode need to buy an Epic/Premium Hero from the NFT Marketplace.
Users can take part in conquests and battles using their Free Heroes and can then earn MCRT $ that can be used to level up the Free Hero or buy Premium Heroes. However, Free Heroes cannot be sold on the Marketplace; only Premium Heroes can.
Even so, the free-to-play mode gives players a great opportunity to explore the Magic Craft Metaverse without putting in any money at the start; once they begin to enjoy the adventures on offer, they can always buy Premium Heroes.

In the future, players will be able to stream live games to the Magic Craft community and earn $MCRT. They will also be able to pay their favorite streamers directly through $MCRT on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch. The game's public beta launch is planned for the last quarter of 2022.
Metaverse Games 2022: Star Atlas (2)
Star Atlas is an open-world, space exploration strategy MMORPG built on the Solana blockchain. The game is a fully immersive 3D intergalactic adventure that can be experienced in virtual reality (VR), powered by Unreal Engine's Nanite.
In Star Atlas, users have to pilot spaceships to search for celestial and terrestrial assets. When they spot such assets, they need to claim them, "mine" them, improve them and trade them with other players.
Players can fight other players and raid their ships to gain scarce resources held by someone else. They can also take part in various other activities around mining, such as trading raw and refined ore, cargo transport and manufacturing retail components.
The default exploration mode provides an exterior view of the spaceship along with the ability to see the interior. Players can also switch to a first-person cockpit view and navigate their ships manually. This view offers a much more immersive experience and is ideal for VR games.
New players start their journey at the corner of the map and can scan visible stars for assets. Higher rewards are placed toward the center; however, the risk associated with these rewards is also higher, and players can lose their hard-earned assets.
Star Atlas supports two different tokens, $ATLAS and $POLIS. $ATLAS is an inflationary currency for trading game assets. It is earned through battles, conquests and exploring the Metaverse.
$POLIS is the governance token and allows holders to take part in the game's decision-making process. It also allows players ownership and management of space cities implemented through Decentralized Autonomous Corporations (DACs).

The Star Atlas ecosystem has an NFT marketplace. Players can buy and sell ships, assets, mining equipment, collectibles and other in-game items. These items can be configured for quests, claiming land, building ships, configuring space stations and creating mining operations that lay the groundwork for the in-game economy.
Because of permanent loss during normal economic activity, all assets are deflationary, which preserves uniqueness and a stable supply. Star Atlas' gameplay, which revolves around staking and mining assets, resembles the functioning of a blockchain network. All micro-transactions (exploration, mining, trading) will be on-chain and placed on the Serum DEX.
Star Atlas will also allow user-generated content to be added to the game. This content will be listed for sale on the Marketplace and can take various forms, such as externally created assets or skins.
Research firm Naavik noted that Star Atlas is likely to be more popular among speculators because of its emphasis on the in-game economy, which could create a high financial barrier to entry for players. However, the NFT and token economy already funds game development and will also be a source of income for players. Star Atlas will be released in phases, and we will let you know when the full game rollout timeline comes out.
Metaverse Games 2022: Treeverse (3)
Treeverse is a fantasy-themed MMORPG with MOBA-style (multiplayer online battle arena) fights between characters. As its founder Loopify mentioned in the announcement, Treeverse is being built as "the Runescape of Blockchain Games."
The idea for Treeverse came from an NFT project called NFTrees, launched by Loopify in February 2021. NFTrees is a collection of 420 randomly generated pixel trees. After this launch, the first iteration of the Treeverse concept emerged and included a place to hang out: a social media alternative in the virtual realm.
So Treeverse started out as an MMO where anyone could chat with others and explore the open-world Metaverse as avatars. Plots in this virtual world (called Founder Plots) can be owned as NFTs. Accordingly, NFTrees holders got a free mint of a plot in the Metaverse, while on August 1, 2021, 10,000 more plots could be minted at 0.125 ETH each. All of them were minted quickly.
All plot owners have private homes in Treeverse where they can display their NFT collections and invite friends to visit. An early private alpha gave access to join and explore the Metaverse only to plot owners. But now anyone with a Metamask wallet can join the game.

As Treeverse moves from an MMO to an MMORPG, the first phase involves introducing playable characters as pfp-style NFTs called Timeless and upgrading the current landscape to suit a more Runescape-like experience. NFTrees holders got a free Timeless mint.
For the P2E element, two ERC20 tokens will be introduced: the governance token $ROOT and the in-game currency $SEED. Beyond these, a marketplace for collectibles/assets (armor, pets, weapons, etc.) and character skills such as melee, magic and crafting are being developed.
The team also recently closed a $25 million funding round from investors such as IDEO Ventures, Animoca Brands, Stani Kulechov (Aave) and SkyVision Capital. The timeline for the full Treeverse experience has not yet been announced.
As crypto and NFTs are adopted, Web3 will become the development and design standard for apps, platforms and games. As a result, games will be rich in trading, and players will find they can both have fun and earn natively while doing their favorite pastimes. The P2E era has just begun.
