In brief
AI summaryHelldivers 2 is a co-op shooter where planet environments like cold temperatures affect weapon performance, such as fire rate and overheating.
Disarming enemies, moving with your team, and managing supply packs are key survival tactics for new players.
Choosing the right armor and strategy type (Offensive, Supply, Defensive) affects damage resistance and mission success.
Helldivers 2 Starting Tactics and Tips
Helldivers 2 is a simple co-op shooter. In this game, where you'll fight giant bug-like aliens on distant planets alongside a few friends, using every kind of weapon and explosive to take them down, staying alive is pretty important. If you're just starting out with Helldivers 2, our Helldivers 2 starting tactics and tips article will help you out.

Pay Attention to Whether Different Environments Will Affect Your Weapons
In this co-op shooter, weapon mechanics are more complex than you'd think. Planets can have different environments, and they affect weapons in different ways. Cold planets will slow the fire rate of some standard weapons. (This can also be beneficial, as it prevents laser weapons from overheating quickly.) Mines can bury themselves deeper in snow, making them harder to spot. It's worth being careful.
Set a Strategy for Your Enemies
- You can disarm both bugs and Automatons. Automatons, once literally left without weapons, will chase you but can do no more than throw a one-handed punch, and bugs will drag themselves at a much slower pace. This is especially important when facing faster or larger bug enemies.
- Your drop pod can not only kill your friends and small enemies, but can also kill bosses and destroy buildings.
- Automaton dropships can be shot down before they unload troops, which buys you a lot of time when fleeing enemies wielding dual chainsaws.
Adjust Your Fire Rate
Many weapons have alternate firing modes, including how fast they fire. Holding down the reload button gives you a menu of options like toggling attachments on and off, or switching between single and full-auto fire.
Use Time Effectively
Calling in strategies involves a time-consuming D-pad minigame that you may or may not have available right now. Fortunately, if you're fast, you can drop a Shield Generator Relay, which creates a bubble that temporarily blocks incoming damage. Use this time to launch larger orbital bombardments that might otherwise be dangerously close.

Move With Your Team
The supply pack in particular gets overlooked, and it doesn't just let you approach teammates and give them ammo — it also lets you store up to four resupply crates when approaching for a resupply, letting you bring them along with you. When a teammate's health drops into the red, you can heal and manage them manually using whatever you have in your inventory.
Avoid Heavy Armor
Generally speaking, some enemy types are quite resistant to bullets. You're more likely to encounter these enemy types while fighting Automatons, but some larger bugs have the same kind of resistance to standard weapons. Even if you take down an M-43 Machine Gun-wielding enemy, your rounds will ricochet and could pose a danger to your fellow soldiers. Carry heavier weapons like the Autocannon to pierce armor. You probably shouldn't head into Automaton territory without weapons that can at least lightly pierce armor.
Avoid the Recoil
Strategies are physical beacons thrown to request something from the ship in orbit. Looking up, you can see ships dropping items or firing from orbit. This also means call-in beacons recoil off enemies and redirect strikes toward you or larger enemies, and you need to account for this too — meaning orbital strikes will adjust as they move and land directly on top of them.
Watch What You Wear
Both armor and boosters give you stat increases. These do things like reducing recoil while prone, giving you extra starting grenades, providing explosive damage resistance, or lowering your odds of dying when taking lethal damage. Don't just pick the first armor set that looks great — think about what you'll wear before each mission. Scout armor can even trigger a constant ping for enemies on the map.
Be Careful With Your Strategic Calls
Strategies are divided into Offensive, Supply, and Defensive categories. Offensive strategies are things like airstrikes and orbital barrages with fairly long cooldowns that cause instant destruction. Supply strategies are heavy or crew-served weapons you can use until you run out of ammo. Defensive strategies are things like shield generators, turrets, and minefields, and are best used to defend objectives like drop zones or to deny areas to the enemy.
Helldivers 2 is currently available on Steam and PS5.
