OnePlus started out as a solid phone brand, but soon began exploring other tech areas such as audio. Last fall, OnePlus released the OnePlus Buds Pro. So what are the OnePlus Buds Pro features? How much do they cost? What are the settings? Let's take a look!
OnePlus Buds Pro Review
A New Color With the OnePlus Buds Pro
Before we get to how the earbuds sound, we need to talk about this color. It is called Radiant Silver and it is very pretty and quite reflective. Of course, it is not the only color available for the earbuds. You can also get them in Glossy White and Matte Black. We recommend the other colors. The Radiant Silver part does not bother the buds, but it becomes slippery when you try to put them in your ear. The earbuds are a fairly typical AirPods Pro clone, with stems that stick down from your ear and silicone tips for sound isolation. The earbuds also have active noise cancellation (ANC) and ambient sound that lets you hear what is going on around you. The silicone tips do a great job of isolating sound, and the ANC is quite good.
How Do You Set Up the OnePlus Buds Pro Settings?
The earbuds connect to your OnePlus phone almost supernaturally. Open the case next to a OnePlus phone and you are prompted to pair. The great thing is that when using a OnePlus phone, the earbud settings are actually part of the phone's operating system. There is no app for the earbuds. You can access the settings from your phone's Bluetooth control panel.
The downside is that there is basically no discoverability for this feature anywhere. You get a quick pop-up when they pair, but that is it. Not in the package, not on the phone, not on the internet. If you use a non-OnePlus phone, there is an app called HeyMelody that you need to install. For those unfamiliar, this is a third-party app that earbud makers can integrate if they do not want to make an app on their own.
Speaking of which, after entering the OnePlus Buds Pro settings, you cannot change some of the controls on the earbuds. When you enter the app, you are asked to set actions for squeeze, double squeeze, triple squeeze and squeeze-and-hold on the stems, but you are only allowed to change two of them. When you try to tap the single squeeze and double squeeze actions, a small dialog tells you these settings cannot be changed.
The earbuds offer you the option to create a sound profile specific to your ears. The three-minute test plays a series of tones at varying volume to each ear to determine your hearing threshold. When this is complete, it creates a sound profile that fills the sound in the earbuds for you.
What Are the OnePlus Buds Pro Features?
Speaking of features every pair of earbuds should have, these earbuds also have in-ear detection that automatically pauses your media when you take them out of your ears. Active noise cancellation works great and lets us significantly reduce the volume of what we listen to for better hearing health. The earbuds work great for phone calls and Zoom/Teams meetings. Incredibly good sound comes through when listening to music. It has a sound driver that lets you hear all the notes in a song.
Battery life is also quite good. OnePlus rates them at 37 hours of total battery life, with seven hours on a single charge. The charging case supports OnePlus's warp charging system, and the company claims that a 10-minute charge with a 5V 1.5A charger will give the case an extra 10 hours of battery. The case also supports Qi wireless charging, which is a plus. As an added advantage, the buds are IP55 dust and sweat/water resistant, and the case even offers IPX4 water protection, which is rare in the wireless earbud world.
