OSM Tactic Against Evenly Matched Teams 2024: The Copying Technique (Best Tactic Against Evenly Matched Teams)
If we're playing against evenly matched teams and doing well in the league, we'll use the copying technique. This is one of the best tactics, because if the opponent is doing better than us but our strength is even over the course of the season, counter-tactics can sometimes fail to work. Different tactics can be good for strong or weak teams, but not for evenly matched ones. That's why we'll pay close attention to what the opponent does. We'll analyze their previous matches to study which tactic they play, which players they use, and their style. Then we'll try to apply the exact same tactic ourselves.
OSM Tactic Against Evenly Matched Teams 2024 Example: Arsenal vs. Manchester United
For example, let's say we're currently managing Manchester United and the opponent is Arsenal. Both teams are making good signings and their strength is roughly even. Let's say we're the home team and doing better than the opponent, but our strength is even. In this case, we can use our usual 4-3-3 formation. Let's line up our team like this: we'll bring in players like Eriksen and Dalot. In our matches, we play through the wings and leave tackling to the referee. We drop our forwards back, keep our midfield holding position, and use zonal marking. We don't use the offside trap.

Settings and Playing Style
If we've set a certain baseline, we'll use settings a bit lower than that baseline. For example, we set our attacking team's PR to 70, our style to 65, and our tempo to 59. That's our normal style. If we're playing against an evenly matched team, we'll lower these settings slightly. We'll bring PR down to around 60, our style to 59, and keep our tempo in the 46-48 range. This lets us take the opponent a bit less seriously without breaking the tactic we play well. It's the best tactic against evenly matched teams, and there's no need to try different styles or new things. Generally, when evenly matched teams play each other, the team that tries a new tactic ends up failing. So trust your own tactic. If you don't trust your tactic and trust the opponent's tactic more, then by all means copy the opponent.
When setting a tactic against evenly matched teams, it's crucial to carefully study the opposing team's characteristics and playing style. For example, with teams of even strength like Manchester United and Arsenal, knowing which players are more effective in which positions can be critical. It's also important to analyze the opponent's matches and observe which formations they use. Identifying the opponent's strongest points and either applying the same tactics or making small changes to gain an advantage is one of the best strategies.
Formation and Game Plan
When playing against evenly matched teams, setting your team's formation and game plan is also crucial. For example, the 4-3-3 formation has a balanced structure both defensively and offensively. Details like effective use of wing players, forwards dropping back to contribute defensively, and the midfield holding position can affect how the match unfolds. Strategies like not using the offside trap and having your defenders play zonal marking can also be part of your game plan.
