The Last of Us TV Series Review: Was It Worth the Wait? (January 2023)

The Last of Us series has finally reached viewers after a long wait. Fans of the game in particular were eagerly awaiting the series and wondering whether it reflects the game. However, let us also note that the series has a very clear plot even for people who have not played the game before. As the Gamer Papers family, we watched the first episode of the series, which broke records before it even came out, and we are here to share some notes with you. Before we move on to our thoughts on the series, let us answer the question for those who are curious: when will episode 2 of The Last of Us series be released?

When Will Episode 2 of The Last of Us Series Be Released?

We will see the second episode of the series on January 22, 2023.

The Last of Us Series Review: Who Are the Characters?

Let us start with the characters. The characters that stand out in the first episode of the series include Joel, Sarah, Tommy, Ellie, Marlene and Theresa. And the interesting part is that actress Merle Dandridge, who brings the character Marlene to life, played the same character in the game. So if you are saying this character looks familiar to me, here is the answer... Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, seems to live up to the game character with her way of speaking and expressions, but unfortunately she did not get full marks from most players. We also think she has some shortcomings in this regard. But we need to give her credit, because she has really slipped into her role. Our main character Joel is the most interesting character of the series, because Pedro Pascal is a perfect fit for this character and has literally reflected the game character. It looks like we will be able to judge the other supporting characters in later episodes of the series.

The Last of Us Series Review: What Is the Story Like?

The plot and story are not very different from the game. The virus is first discussed on a TV show from an earlier date; when one of the scientists on the show draws attention to the reality of the virus, the room suddenly tenses and goes silent. Then we go to a more recent date, 2003, the date when everything literally started. Sarah and Joel, unaware of what is to come, are arguing at home about whether there is shell in the egg when they suddenly find themselves in the middle of a virus that turns people into zombies. When this virus quickly takes the whole country under its influence, they look for a way to escape. Just when we say okay, everything is under control now, Joel's real daughter Sarah closes her eyes to life in her father's arms. And now we are in 2023... The outbreak and the military forces have literally taken over the country. Joel has hardly anyone left and shares his life with Theresa. The Fireflies who could save them from this outbreak are being held behind closed doors. Joel meets Ellie, a Firefly, and so they seal their fates.

The Last of Us Series Review: What Are the Similarities?

The series has many parts similar to the game. The episodes are prepared in a similar way to the game with great care, from Sarah's death scene to the part where Joel lies on the couch. The wall writing "When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light" is an example of this and is handled quite beautifully. We already said that the person who plays Marlene in the game is the same as the character in the series. Another detail that caught our eye in terms of similarity was the escape scene in the early parts. In this part the camera takes Sarah's point of view in a way while showing her in third person. So it is identical to the game, and the dark atmosphere is reflected well.
