The Ideal Game for December 21: Vigil: The Longest Night

The longest night of the year, December 21, is upon us. Being cooped up at home because of the pandemic and running out of games to play sent us searching. We reached the end of this search with a wonderful game called Vigil: The Longest Night. As a team, we reviewed for you the game that we think portrays December 21 superbly with both its name and theme.

Vigil: The Longest Night is an action-platformer with Soulsborne aesthetics and mechanics. It caught our interest that it resembles a Metroidvania in gameplay. Although it is not a groundbreaking game in this respect, compared with games of its own kind it has managed to be one of the leaders. The biggest difference Vigil: The Longest Night has from its peers is that it is not a roguelike.

Although the game does not manage to dazzle us with its visuals, it draws players in with the atmosphere it creates. The side of the game that drives us crazy is that the in-game map falls short at giving directions. If you get lost a lot in games and finding your way back drives you crazy (like us), we recommend not playing this game. The game's fast travel feature reduces this confusion, though not by much. A different feature Longest Night brings is that the levels are not procedurally generated. Every stage, every corridor, every labyrinth has been specially built and carefully made. This shows the value of the effort that went into it.

We feel the main focus of the game is combat. The upgrade paths that different weapons have let you customize your character's attributes to increase health or damage, so you can fight in your own style. Although not as much as in the recently released Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, being able to choose your own combat style and customize your weapons as you wish is a big plus. Bringing Dark Souls-type monsters and gameplay to the 2D world, this game earns a positive score from us.
