What Are the Best Wireless Headphones? June 2022
Sony WH-1000XM4

The previous leader on this list was Sony's WH-1000XM3, and the WH-1000XM4 has everything that made those headphones great, and a bit more for a lot of money. The 1000XM4's design remains largely the same and provides the same comfort and balance as the previous model. The battery life of these new cans is unchanged, offering 30 hours with active noise cancelling on and 38 hours without. Although Sony says it improved its software algorithms and hardware when it comes to active noise cancelling, the 1000XM4 is basically the same as the XM3 in that respect.
Several important changes to Sony's WH-1000XM4 include the introduction of Bluetooth multipoint connection, which lets them connect to two different devices at the same time. Essentially, you could be watching Netflix on your laptop, take a phone call on your mobile device and then effortlessly return to streaming. The XM4s also have a wear sensor that automatically pauses content when you take the headphones off, and DSEE Extreme, Sony's newest music upscaling technology. None of these changes is big, but they do not need to be. Sony's headphones were already the best, and this new model only cements that position.
Wyze Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Their design and build quality feel nothing but luxurious, and the generous ear cushions provide comfort as well as good passive sound isolation. But what really surprised us about these cans is their feature set. They have both active noise cancelling and an ambient transparency mode. By tapping just one earcup you can instantly activate conversation mode. The auto-pause feature stops the tunes when you take them off and starts playing when you put them back on. You can also choose between your phone's built-in voice assistant or Amazon Alexa.
Finally, the sound quality is very nice. Plenty of bass and clear rendering of high frequencies are at your fingertips, but this is an area where their low price does not quite keep up with more expensive models. The mids can get muddy, and we do not recommend listening over the analog cable if the headphones are off. They rely on the built-in amp for most of their sound quality.
Adidas RPT-01

You have probably seen runners wearing wireless headphones in the gym or outdoors. But most of those headphones were never designed for athletic pursuits. They can work when needed, but if you want a set of wireless cans built specifically for the demands of a workout, the Adidas RPT-01 is the real deal. Let's start with the materials. The breathable fabric wrapping the headband and ear cups may not look like much, but it is designed to wick sweat while providing grip and, most importantly, it is removable and washable.
As on-ear headphones, the RPT-01 may not give fully enveloping sound, but we think their low weight more than makes up for it. The last thing you want when you go for a run is the feeling of something big and heavy sitting on your head. The headband is shaped to provide a lot of clamping force. Our review expert notes that its vise-like grip may be uncomfortable for casual listening sessions, but it is a big benefit for the RPT-01's primary job of being great workout companions.
When it comes to sound quality, these cans may not please audiophiles, but they deliver what fitness enthusiasts want most: bass. Plenty of low-end power is perfect for getting through a tough workout, and the RPT-01 provides it. They also have impressive endurance, with a claimed 40 hours of battery life.
Apple AirPods Max

Where the AirPods Max really shine is ANC, transparency and call quality, each of which is best in class for wireless headphones. That says something considering how good the competition (Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700) is. The noise cancelling is great, and our reviewer believes the transparency mode is the closest thing to not wearing headphones. Apple has also worked its usual "it just works" magic with the AirPods Max's controls. The Digital Crown, placed on top of the right earcup, may look a bit unusual, but it is intuitive and even a little addictive. The dedicated button for ANC/transparency is also perfectly positioned and works like a charm.
The innovative mesh materials used in the headband and ear cushions are comfortable, but they cannot fully make up for the AirPods Max's one big drawback: their weight. Since they are much heavier than the other models on this list, you may find them too heavy for long listening sessions. Considering how great they sound, that is a bit of a shame. Battery life is on the low side at 20 hours, but that number may be conservative. At lower volumes it can easily reach up to 25. Pairing with Apple devices and switching between them is very easy. The only thing we think Apple needs to rethink with the AirPods Max is the protective travel case, which is neither very protective nor very handy for travelers.
