BioWare closed: the end of a 30-year story
In a short farewell on its official blog, BioWare announced that the studio is closing and that early development of the new Mass Effect has ended. The message looked back on Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem, and thanked players for making those worlds their own through their choices.

As reported by Polygon, EA chief operating officer David Tinson and studios head Cam Weber told staff in a memo that the company had taken a "hard look" at its business. EA will now focus on proven franchises such as Apex Legends, Battlefield and Madden. The executives wrote that a small team at BioWare had been working on early development of Mass Effect, and that the decision not to move forward with it means closing the studio and its Edmonton office.
The background: debt and cost cuts
According to Bloomberg, the layoffs affect roughly 400 people across EA, about 50 of them at BioWare. In August, EA went private in a $55 billion deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), Affinity Partners and Silver Lake. The deal left the company with around $18 billion in debt. EA is targeting $700 million in annual cost reductions, $170 million of which falls under "organizational efficiency" and is now turning into layoffs.
In the same restructuring, EA is continuing with a new Star Wars shooter developed jointly by Respawn and DICE, along with a new Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel's Iron Man. On The Sims side, the game codenamed Project Lotus has been paused and the team has shifted to Project Evergreen. GameSpot adds that the Skate team has been downsized, while a "social-first open-world" football game remains in development. The direction is clear: EA is moving away from risky new projects toward brands that reach huge audiences.
BioWare's difficult final years
Founded in 1995, BioWare was acquired by EA in 2007 and became one of the era's most beloved RPG studios with Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The last new game in the series, Mass Effect: Andromeda, received a mixed reception in 2017. Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which bundled the original trilogy, followed in 2021. The studio's final major game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, fell short of sales expectations, and as GameSpot notes, the layoffs that followed left only a core team focused on Mass Effect.
A short timeline shows how difficult the last decade was for the studio:
- 1995: BioWare is founded
- 2007: EA acquires the studio
- 2017: Mass Effect: Andromeda launches to a mixed reception
- 2020: a new Mass Effect game is announced
- 2021: Mass Effect Legendary Edition bundles the original trilogy
- After Veilguard: Dragon Age: The Veilguard misses sales expectations, followed by layoffs
- October 21, 2026: EA closes the studio and cancels the new Mass Effect
What is in the leaked Mass Effect Universe trailer?
Right after the closure, a roughly two-minute "Mass Effect Universe" trailer was shared on Reddit and spread quickly. Reddit moderators could not verify it at first, but Jason Schreier wrote on Bluesky that the video comes from the Mass Effect game BioWare was developing until the shutdown. According to VGC, the trailer was put together by a small team inside the studio using pre-production assets.
The video points to a smaller-scale spy thriller set in the Milky Way after the Reaper war, and fan favorite Liara T'Soni appears in it. The reaction from fans has been the same everywhere: deep disappointment that a project with such a strong hook was cancelled.

What happens to Mass Effect now?
For games, Mass Effect is now on the shelf. VGC reports that Amazon's Mass Effect TV series is still in production, though. The future of the franchise rights is the big open question. Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah pointed out on his YouTube channel that EA owns all the rights to Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Jade Empire. Darrah thinks EA may be more open to selling them now that nobody inside is working on them, but it could also bury them entirely. He says the company is in "cost-control mode" for now, and a sale could come up if it shifts to a revenue focus.
According to GameSpot, Darrah pointed to the model Konami used for Silent Hill, reviving the series through partnerships with outside studios, as one possible path. David Gaider, meanwhile, said after the closure that Dragon Age is now dead. For fans, the future of both series now depends entirely on EA's decision.
It is worth remembering that in November 2025 BioWare tried to reassure fans by saying "EA remains committed." A closure less than a year later is hard news, especially for players who grew up with the series.
