Modern Warfare 4 Out Now: Maps, DMZ and Game Pass

Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It ships with a new campaign, 20 multiplayer maps and DMZ on Hajin, but it is not on Game Pass at launch.

What is the Modern Warfare 4 campaign about?

According to Activision's May reveal, Modern Warfare 4 opens with North Korea launching a full-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing real combat for the first time, as a routine patrol turns into a fight for survival in collapsing cities. Captain Price, meanwhile, is an outlaw. Cut loose from the system he once served, he is chasing revenge when he picks up the trail of a devastating weapon that could tip the balance.

The story moves through trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fights in New York, chases in Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and operations to retake occupied cities. Activision says the team paid close attention to the region's culture, history and military detail. It is completely new territory for the series.

What's in Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer?

The game launches with a large map pool: 12 new 6v6 maps, 4 Gunfight maps, 3 Ground War maps and Kill Block, set in the Westbridge Training Facility. Kill Block's modular sections can create more than 500 layouts, and the map reshapes itself between rounds. It supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight formats and will grow over the seasons.

Ballistic Authority and new movement

Infinity Ward calls its new weapon-focused tech Ballistic Authority. The headline change is that bloom on hip fire is gone entirely. Recoil, aim and weapon handling have been rebuilt to reflect player input more directly. Movement has expanded with mantling, climbing, hanging and vaulting, with the goal of making it easier to flank through vertical spaces and take fights from new angles.

Create-a-Class, Gunny and two Prestige paths

The redesigned Create-a-Class combines operator, weapons, equipment and killstreaks into a single loadout. The new Gunny system recommends quick, effective builds for close, mid and long range, tuned by Infinity Ward's weapons team. Apex Attachments, unlocked by fully leveling a weapon, can significantly change how it behaves. Prestige now has two paths: Classic Prestige, which resets unlocks, and Regular Prestige, which keeps your loadouts.

DMZ is back on Hajin

The community's favorite extraction mode, DMZ, returns on the Hajin map. Solo or in a squad, you drop in as deniable operatives tasked with recovering advanced military technology left behind by the war. Weather, dynamic military objectives and patrolling enemy forces make every deployment different. Looting, fighting, bargaining, betraying and extracting with what you have are all up to you.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?

No. According to the Call of Duty team's October 15 update, Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release and will not join Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Game Pass Ultimate members keep access to Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III. Digital pre-orders unlocked early access to the campaign on October 16 and to DMZ on October 20. The pre-order bonus included the Hunter Killer operator skin, the Gilded Pearl camo pack and the Inner Circuit M4 blueprint in classic green for Xbox's 25th anniversary. The Vault Edition adds skins for Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix, a Special Forces pack representing the UK, Germany, France and South Korea, five signature weapon blueprints, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ starting bonus.

PC and Switch 2

The PC version was built by Infinity Ward with Beenox. It offers DLSS 4.5, expanded real-time ray tracing across the campaign, multiplayer and DMZ, and multiple upscaling and frame generation options. On PC the game is sold through Battle.net, Steam and Xbox PC. The Switch 2 version was developed natively by Infinity Ward with Digital Legends, marking Modern Warfare's return to Nintendo players for the first time in more than a decade.

Valor Pack and Warzone integration

The C.O.D.E. Valor Pack, available at launch, was created with US Marine Corps veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter. Activision will donate all net proceeds to the Call of Duty Endowment, which it says has placed more than 180,000 veterans into jobs since 2009. Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and season progression from Season 1, at which point the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Warzone will no longer be playable.
