FM23 Corner Tactic Guide: What You Need to Know

FM 23 corner tactics can be found as directly downloadable tactic files in plenty of sources, but players often complain that these tactics don't deliver the performance they want with their own team. The biggest reason for this is that ready-made tactics don't fit every team's player profile. If the person who made the tactic was playing with a team full of world-class players with very high attributes, that same ready-made tactic produces no results at all with a team of less spectacular players.

At the same time, the difficulty of scoring from corners in Football Manager games changes every year. In some FM versions your players manage to score plenty of goals from corners even without any adjustments, while in others you need long tactical tweaks. FM23, on the other hand, takes a fairly balanced approach to this. With a few correct adjustments, you can easily increase the number of goals your team scores from corners.

In this piece, instead of going with a ready-made tactic, we'll explain the key points of building a corner tactic in FM 23. Preparing your own corner tactic will increase the effectiveness of the setup you apply based on your players' abilities.

What You Need to Know When Preparing an FM 2023 Corner Tactic

The first thing you need to pay attention to when building a corner tactic is evaluating the attributes of the first two players you want to be involved with the ball. In other words, the attributes of the player taking the corner and the player who directs the ball toward goal or to the next player, whether with their head or foot, are essential for having successful corner statistics.

For your player taking the corner to use the ball effectively, they need to stand out in certain in-game attributes. In FM23, on the screen that holds a player's information, there is an attribute dedicated purely to corners.

Depending on their preferred foot, you should assign the players with the best corner attribute to take the left or right corners. We don't have much information on this, but a player also having a high Technique attribute can raise your success rate for taking good corners. Alongside this, you may specifically want to favour players whose skill set includes bending crosses.

After choosing the player who will take the corner, you need to decide on the player you'll designate as the target. The target player is the one who will meet the pass or cross that comes in during the corner kick. Depending on your delivery instruction, the target player needs to have certain attributes after the corner is taken.

There are a total of 6 corner delivery types in FM23: Mixed, short, near post, far post, edge of the box, six-yard box. Your player at the near post, far post, and in the six-yard box needs to finish the corner with a header, while your player at short passing and near the edge of the box needs to take the next touch with their foot.

If you're going to take the corner as a "short" delivery, meaning play it as a pass, the player receiving the pass needs high Passing, Technique, Crossing, and Dribbling attributes so they can build play.

If you're going to play it as a longer pass to the edge of the box, your target player needs good First Touch, Long Shots, and Finishing attributes to be able to take an effective shot. If you're going to play the ball along the ground into the box, First Touch and Finishing attributes will help turn the corner into a goal.

If you're going to take your corner as a cross, three attributes of the player you expect to receive the ball play a critical role in the shot's chance of becoming a goal: Jumping Reach, Heading, and Bravery. In this case, a high Finishing attribute is also an important factor, though it isn't decisive for headers coming from corners. For this reason, you can make use of defenders whose heading-related attributes are high due to their position on corner kicks. When you designate your defender who heads the ball effectively as the target of the corner, they can turn into a goalscorer for your team to the extent of their heading ability in defence.

If your team's forwards mainly stand out for attributes like pace and dribbling, they're generally players with relatively lower physical strength, shorter height, and weaker heading ability. These forwards, who can comfortably slip into the gaps in fast short-passing play and who, in direct end-to-end games, can get onto long balls faster than the opposing defence, unfortunately aren't suited to being chosen as the target player on corners. Forwards with high physical strength, tall height but who move more slowly, on the other hand, are generally more successful at corners. If your team doesn't have this type of forward, we recommend designating your defenders as the target for meeting corners.

Preparing an FM 23 Corner Tactic 2023

Above, you can see a sample setup in the corner attack organisation, where the player taking the ball delivers it to the defender positioned at the near post. In this setup, the near-post cross is expected to be sent toward the opposing goal by the defender who can be effective in the air. Within the organisation, your midfielder will cut in from outside the middle to distract the opposing players while the corner is taken, your player standing close to the six-yard box will mark the goalkeeper, and your players at the foot of the post will try to finish off any loose balls. You can change the corner delivery type by clicking on the player who will take the corner. This way, within the same tactic, you can also designate your defender at the far post as the target.

By paying attention to the attributes we've mentioned, you can easily build your own corner tactics. The groundwork needed to set up an FM 23 corner tactic will be transferring in the right players you can use on corners. While using the tactic shown in the image, we strongly recommend adjusting it to your own player types and re-designating which players take the corner and which stand as the target based on your own squad. Otherwise, the corner tactic won't work for your team.
