How Do You Create Folders in Gmail?

Create a Folder in Gmail

To create a folder in Gmail, go to Settings and create a new label, because Gmail does not call them "folders". They are called "labels", but they work the same way as folders. When you create a folder for the first time, you may want to create several that you know you will need. The best place to do this is Gmail Settings. Then, going forward, you can also create another new folder in a few other ways.

  • Go to the Gmail website, sign in and select the gear icon in the upper right.
  • Select Settings, and then select See all settings at the top of the sidebar.
  • Select the Labels tab at the top of the Settings page.
  • First, you will see the System Labels, which are the default folders mentioned earlier. Go to the Labels section and select Create new label.
  • Enter a name for the label (folder) and optionally check the box under Nest label under and choose a parent label from the drop-down list.

This is a good way to structure your folders with subfolders. As an example, you can create a parent folder for Clients and create subfolders under it for each of your clients.

  • Select Create and you will see your new label (folder) in the list.

You can choose where it is displayed by using the Show and Hide options under Show in label list and Show in message list.

  • When you are done, you can return to your Inbox by selecting it from the menu on the left.

Once you are used to using folders, you can create a new one directly from your inbox. Just do one of the following:

  • Select Create new label from the menu on the left.
  • From the top toolbar, select Move to or Labels and select Create new. This applies the selected email to it.
  • Right-click an email, hover your cursor over Move to or Label as and select Create new. This also applies the selected email to it.

Moving an Email to a Folder

You have several different ways to move emails to folders in Gmail. Probably the simplest is to use the Move to option on the toolbar.

  • In your inbox, select the email you want to move.
  • In the top toolbar, select the Move to option.
  • Select the folder where you want to put the email.

When you do this, it removes the email from your Inbox and places it in the folder. This is a great way to keep your inbox clean and organized.

  • You can also move an email to a folder by doing one of the following:
  1. Drag the email from your inbox to the folder in the menu on the left.
  2. Right-click the email, hover your cursor over Move to and select the folder.

By creating folders (or labels) in Gmail, you can keep your messages organized for work, school, personal use or any structure you find most useful.
