TFT 2.0: What Riot Has Said So Far

Teamfight Tactics has seen major success since its 2019 launch, especially with TFT Set 6, which won players back after the dip during Set 5.

TFT went from strength to strength in 2021. Even though Reckoning and Shadow Items fell short of players' expectations, an explosive launch with Gizmos & Gadgets in TFT Set 6 brought the auto battler back to the top.

Old names like William "scarra" Li, Becca, and even Jeremy "Secret Toast" Wang came back to the auto battler, and hype is brewing for what Riot will do next.

But the developers' eyes are on a bigger project than even Set 6.5 Mid-Set or Set 7. According to lead developer Stephen "Mortdog" Mortimer, this is being thought of as "TFT 2.0." This isn't a sequel on its own, but rather a rapid expansion of the auto battler to keep the set innovating.

Some Information About TFT 2.0

"I remember Meddler [VP of League of Legends Game Management] saying 'we need to find a TFT 2.0,' and in a lot of different ways, I think this year really pushed us in that direction," Mortdog said on his livestream. He also added, "Early next year, there will be some announcements that I think will show what we're talking about."

This includes some major in-game changes, including the introduction of Silco, TFT's first non-League of Legends unit in Set 6.5. Set 7 is also in development, but no information has been made public.

That said, with the auto battler's development team growing every month, this is also being reflected internally at Riot.

"We have more people. We have a leadership team, new engineers, new artists, new designers. Mortdog said he feels 2022 will keep leveling up [TFT]."

With a three-year plan already in motion — and enough set designs to last even longer than that — the TFT developers are confident the auto battler won't be going anywhere in the coming years if they can deliver "half of the things."

"In typical TFT fashion, we might be biting off more than we can chew, but if we can deliver half of it, we'll take it," Mortdog said.

"I sit around all day listening to player complaints... there's a lot of room for growth, and we're already at a high ceiling, but we can grow even more."

Many player requests have already been met, with a TFT co-op mode already out and a spectator client for tournaments (though there's no plan to bring it to regular players). That said, TFT has a bright future ahead, starting with the Set 6.5 Mid-Set expansion in February.
