How Does Checkmate Happen in Chess?

Above all, the main goal in chess is to win the game by checkmating the opponent. If the opponent's king is threatened by another piece (pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen) and can neither block the threat nor find a place to escape, it's checkmate. There are many kinds of checkmate in chess. They're often named after the square each knight is played to, or after the grandmaster who played them.

How Do You Checkmate in 2 Moves (Fool's Mate) in Chess?

When you say checkmate in 2 moves, many people might think of Scholar's Mate, but that's wrong. Scholar's Mate takes 3 moves. The name for checkmate in 2 moves is Fool's Mate. Knowing Fool's Mate, which is much rarer to encounter than Scholar's Mate, could come in handy down the line. Maybe your opponent will make 2 nonsense moves to test whether you know it, and you'll get to prove that you do :)

Checkmate in 2 Moves - The First Moves of Fool's Mate

For Fool's Mate to finish in 2 moves, we need to be playing with the black pieces. Of course, we could also do Fool's Mate with the white pieces, but since the opponent would need to make 2 moves, checkmate would happen on our 3rd move instead. So, let's look at checkmate in 2 moves from black's perspective.

White pushes the pawn in front of their light-squared bishop forward 1 square, playing the pawn to f3.

Black responds by playing the pawn in front of the king, the e-pawn, forward 2 squares with e5.

Checkmate in 2 Moves - The Second Moves of Fool's Mate and Checkmate

Here, white makes what could be the worst move in chess history. White, who won't get checkmated no matter what they play except for one specific move, pushes the pawn in front of the knight next to the bishop forward 2 squares to g4. With this huge mistake, black has checkmate in one move.

Here, black's checkmate in one move is to bring the queen to h4 and deliver check. With the path to check fully opened, white has no piece that can block the queen, and the king has nowhere to go. This is how Fool's Mate (colloquially called the "stupid" mate) happens. Black checkmates white in 2 moves.
