When Is Ghost of Yotei (Ghost of Tsushima 2) Coming Out?

Sucker Punch Productions' 2020 release Ghost of Tsushima became a smash hit with players and critics alike. This epic game, which followed a warrior who moved like a ghost while upholding the samurai's honor, told a dramatic story set on Tsushima Island in feudal Japan. Now, the sequel to that acclaimed game, Ghost of Yotei, has been revealed at the PlayStation State of Play 2024 event. Ghost of Yotei will this time take place in a different region from Tsushima, in the lands around Mount Yōtei, and will introduce a new hero. The game is also Sucker Punch's first title built from the ground up for PlayStation 5.

"This is also the first game Sucker Punch has built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we're excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima and make it even more realistic. We have massive draw distances that let you look far off into the environment, a brand-new sky with twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable wind movement in the grass and foliage, and more improvements we'll be sharing in the future. Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons."

Ghost of Yotei (Ghost of Tsushima 2) New Mechanics and Weapons

Sucker Punch stated that Ghost of Yotei is being built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and that Ghost of Tsushima's visual foundation will be pushed much further.

Ghost of Yotei will bring plenty of innovation not just visually, but in gameplay as well. Sucker Punch noted that the new setting gives them the opportunity to add new mechanics and weapons. That means brand-new weapons and combat strategies for Atsu to use will be introduced to players. Although Sucker Punch said they'll share more details on this down the line, it's certain the game's combat system will see some fundamental changes and innovations.

When Is Ghost of Yotei (Ghost of Tsushima 2) Coming Out?

Ghost of Yotei is planned to release for PlayStation 5 in 2025. However, it's not yet known whether the game will come to other platforms. Sucker Punch is expected to share more information on this in the coming months.

What's the Story?

In Ghost of Tsushima, players witnessed the heroic story of the samurai Jin Sakai on Tsushima Island. Ghost of Yotei, however, goes far beyond Tsushima, taking us into a new world in the Hokkaido region in northern Japan, around Mount Yōtei. That's also where the game's name comes from; Mount Yōtei is a volcanic mountain located in Hokkaido, and it will play a major role in this new game.

In Ghost of Yotei, we'll experience a story quite different from Jin Sakai's. This time, the game's hero will be a new character named Atsu. While not many details have been shared yet about who Atsu is or her background, she's expected to be a character with strong ties to samurai culture. Just as Jin Sakai's inner struggle in Ghost of Tsushima revolved around balancing honor with ghost-like combat, Atsu will have her own unique journey.

The game takes place more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, in 1603. As they explore the lands around Mount Yōtei, players will get to experience this important historical period of Japan up close.

Ghost of Yotei now focuses on the Hokkaido region in northern Japan instead of Tsushima Island. Hokkaido's natural beauty and harsh climate will form the foundation of Ghost of Yotei's new game world. Mount Yōtei will be the main setting in this region.
