JPMorgan became the first bank to enter the metaverse!

JPMorgan, the largest bank in the US, said it became the first bank to reach the metaverse by opening a lounge in Decentraland, a virtual world built on blockchain technology.

JPMorgan first bank metaverseAlongside the announcement of the Onyx lounge (the name refers to the bank's permissioned Ethereum-based services suite), JPMorgan also published a paper exploring how businesses can find opportunities in the metaverse.

What Will the Bank Opened in the Metaverse Be Used For?

Christine Moy, JPMorgan's head of crypto and metaverse, said in an email, "There's a lot of interest from clients in learning more about the metaverse base. What needs to be built out next in technology, commercial infrastructure, privacy/identity, and the workforce to maximize the full potential of our life in the current reality and the metaverse base."

With things like non-fungible tokens (NFTs) becoming mainstream, last year saw breathtaking progress in the all-encompassing metaverse world of immersive gaming, world-building, and entertainment, backed by integrated commerce applications. In January, electronics giant Samsung opened a version of its New York store in Decentraland, and in November, Barbados also set up a metaverse embassy, again in Decentraland.

JPMorgan opens its "metanomics" assessment by pointing out that the average price of a virtual land parcel doubled in the second half of 2021, rising from $6,000 in June to $12,000 by December across four major Web 3 metaverse sites: Decentraland, The Sandbox, Somnium Space, and Cryptovoxels.

"Over time, the virtual real estate market may start to see services like those in the physical world, including credit, mortgages, and leasing agreements," JPMorgan said in its report. It added that decentralized finance (DeFi) collateral management could very well come into play, and that this could be handled by decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) instead of traditional finance companies.

Pointing to applications like a number of entertainment providers as well as RTFKT, a virtual sneaker designer recently acquired by Nike, the report said that working in the metaverse base would also be lucrative. Citing an estimate that in-game ad spending will reach $18.41 billion by 2027, the bank said another major spending area would likely be advertising.

The JPMorgan paper, noting that many areas still need improvement, tried to weigh the metaverse hype against reality. These include the commercial infrastructure as well as avatars' overall user experience and performance.

"We believe that the current virtual gaming environment—every virtual world with its own population, GDP, in-game currency, and digital assets—has elements that parallel the existing global economy," the bank's report said. "This is where our longstanding core competencies in cross-border payments, foreign exchange, financial asset creation, trading, and custody, as well as our large-scale consumer base, could play a significant role in the metaverse."
