Microsoft's Best New Windows Apps, Per Its Store Awards

Microsoft is rewarding many of its best apps and developers in a new round of Microsoft Store App Awards. The company announced the winners, runners-up, and finalists across various award categories split between the user-nominated Community Choice Awards and the internally-selected Microsoft Store Editor's Choice Awards. While the prizes are unknown, the awards are meant to raise awareness of the various apps available on the Microsoft Store.

What Are the Best New Windows Apps According to Microsoft?

Community Choice Awards

• Best utility apps, such as ShareX and Ookla's Speedtest.
• Best file management apps, such as Files App and Rufus.
• Best open-platform apps, such as Auto Dark Mode, EarTrumpet, and ModernFlyouts.

Microsoft Store Editor's Choice Awards

• Best video entertainment app as Disney+.
• Best audio and music entertainment app as Spotify.
• Best creativity apps for Graphics and 3D, such as Canva and Paint.NET.
• Best creativity apps for audio and video as Wondershare Filmora.
• Best productivity app as LiquidText.
• Best social app as Discord.

Microsoft's editorial team also gave special recognition to Talk for Me, a text-to-speech and speech assistance app. The app store, which revamped the Microsoft Store on Windows in 2021, faced some criticism for not having enough compatibility with a number of apps. Microsoft recently added its own Microsoft Teams app to the Microsoft Store with Windows 10 and Windows 11 support in mid-May.

Shortly after, the company confirmed at its most recent Build conference that the waitlist program for Win32 apps on the Microsoft Store had come to an end. This will bring even more app compatibility to the Microsoft Store, especially for apps built in C++, WinForms, WPF, MAUI, React, Rust, Flutter, and Java, as long as they run on Windows. Many outlets noted that the Win32 program had, oddly, been selective in the past, supporting third-party apps like Discord, Firefox, and Zoom while some widely used apps, such as Google Chrome and Steam, weren't allowed on the Microsoft Store. With the restrictions lifted, it will now be interesting to see which apps make their way to the app store. It will also be interesting to see how future Microsoft Store App Awards turn out once more Win32 programs are added to the app store.
