How Do You Charge a Laptop via USB-C?

You've probably used USB connections to charge smaller devices from your computer or a wall outlet. That works fine because older USB connectors had enough wattage to successfully run those small batteries. Earlier versions of USB could only handle a limited amount of power, which is why laptop chargers usually kept their bigger, bulkier cables.

USB-C changed that. This connector type now delivers enough power to feed most laptops (especially the Type-C 3.0 version). That makes laptop charging a fresh talking point for USB connections, especially as more laptops now hit the market with USB-C charging compatibility.

So how do you tell whether your current laptop has a USB-C port that also works for charging? You can always look it up, but the easiest way is to examine your charger. You can identify a Type-C charger by its distinctive features. USB-C's connector is small and round, significantly different from earlier USB versions. It also works no matter which way you plug it into the right port, so you don't need to flip it the right way around. If your charger uses that connector and it fits your USB-C port, you've got a winner!

USB-C chargers work with plenty of different devices, so they're definitely not limited to laptops. Newer phones use USB-C charging, car chargers can come with USB-C ports, and portable chargers (discussed more below) may have USB-C options. But laptops, at least for now, tend to have USB-C more often than other devices.

Will Any Port Work With Any Charger?

USB-C is a universal charging standard. Technically, that means it shouldn't matter which USB-C charger you use — a laptop should be able to run off any USB-C charging port or power bank. In the real world, that's taking a bit of time to become reality. Today, most laptop USB-C chargers are interchangeable, but it's not guaranteed.

Some laptops come with USB-C ports that don't charge. This is most common on laptops that ship with their own proprietary charger — a number of laptops can charge either way, but only the proprietary charger tends to power up the laptop faster. The Samsung Notebook 9 and the 2019 HP Envy 13 are examples of this. Meanwhile, laptops that rely entirely on USB-C might not charge with just any charger. In its testing, PCWorld found that HP's Spectre x2 wouldn't charge with any USB-C charger besides its own. Other devices, like the Apple MacBook Pro, don't have such strict restrictions; a new USB-C authentication system may help with this issue in the near future.

While we personally haven't heard of any harm from using a USB-C charger other than the one that shipped with your laptop, there's always a small risk when plugging a laptop into an unknown power source. Faulty cables can be an issue too. Microsoft acknowledges this by saying you can charge a Surface with a USB-C port, but it strongly recommends using the Surface charger that came with the laptop, because a USB-C charger will be much slower due to how power is measured inside the device. In short, it's a good idea to buy cables and chargers from reputable sources and to think twice about using a cable you found lying on the floor of a conference room.
