Modern Warfare 4 SBMM complaints exploded at launch, with players saying skill-based matchmaking turns every lobby into a tournament final. Infinity Ward says its goal is simply that every match is a good match.
Key facts
- Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (released October 23, 2026)
- Issue: Skill-based matchmaking (SBMM)
- System in use: Classic matchmaking
- Who responded: Multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot
- Changes promised: None so far
- Second DMZ debate: the self-revive Possum trait
- Metacritic score: 84 (per GameSpot)
Why is Modern Warfare 4 SBMM so controversial?
SBMM is short for skill-based matchmaking, the system that pairs you with players of similar ability. It has been one of Call of Duty's hottest topics for years. Many players feel it makes every match too sweaty.
As Dexerto recalls, Black Ops 7 tried to address that with Open Matchmaking, which leans less on skill. Then Season 5 introduced Classic matchmaking, and players said matches got noticeably harder. Infinity Ward stuck with Classic for Modern Warfare 4, citing data that showed better player retention, shorter queue times and lower match quit rates than Open.
What did Infinity Ward say?
Multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot told IGN he isn't sure matchmaking can ever be perfected. For the studio, he said, the most important thing is that the matches it puts together are good matches.
Cecot added that the team studies player data and can measure when a decision hurts a certain group of players. But he didn't explain how MW4's matchmaking works, and he didn't say whether any adjustments are planned.

What are players complaining about?
Criticism spread quickly on social media after launch. One player called it the most miserable experience to date. Another said every lobby feels like a CDL final. Some also point to spawns and certain maps, though a few hope things settle down over the next few weeks.
Which playlists have softer matchmaking?
YouTuber TheXclusiveAce found an interesting detail. Modes listed under 'Popular' appear to use the more forgiving Open Matchmaking and persistent lobbies, even though they aren't labeled that way. If you want a lighter experience, try this:
- Pick modes from the 'Popular' section instead of Quick Play
- Choose Search and Destroy or Team Deathmatch from there
- Enjoy persistent lobbies that keep you with the same players between matches
The DMZ Possum debate
SBMM isn't the only flashpoint. Eurogamer reports that DMZ's Possum trait is splitting players. With it active, you can revive yourself once per match after being killed. You enter a Last Stand state and must pick yourself up, which takes about 10 uninterrupted seconds, and you lose all the loot you were carrying.
The problem is there's no easy way to tell whether a downed enemy has it. Possum unlocks within a few hours on the Warfighter path, so a team's numbers advantage can vanish mid-fight. Some players want it removed right away. Others suggest counters, like placing mines on bodies or simply moving on, since a revived player has no loot worth chasing.
What else is happening in Modern Warfare 4?
The game launched on October 23 and, per GameSpot, holds a strong 84 on Metacritic. Its day-one CODE Valor Pack costs $20, with all proceeds going to the Call of Duty Endowment, which helps veterans find jobs. The pack adds Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter as a playable operator. For the full rundown, see our Modern Warfare 4 launch guide.
