MultiVersus has a simple core concept. You and your opponent pick a character from a roster spanning different franchises and fight in a 2D arena using different attacks and moves until one of you falls off the stage a set number of times. Beyond the fun of watching characters like Arya Stark and Shaggy face off, the game has a much deeper structure than that. Its controls are pretty simple, which only adds to the fun! We hope you enjoy our MultiVersus beginner's guide: tactics and tips that we've put together for you. ✌

Learning the Basic Move Set

The first step to mastering any fighting game, platform fighter or not, is understanding your character's moves. In MultiVersus, every character shares the same basic move set that applies to all of them. Every attack, whether normal or special, can change depending on which direction you're holding when you press the button. Go through every move before a match so you can see how well your character performs with every direction and attack combination. Some attacks that are usually special can also be charge attacks. If a small circle appears next to your character when you press the button, you can hold that attack to make it stronger. Every character can jump and dodge, but each has its own differences in height and recovery. That's why you need to pay attention to your character's individual quirks.

Don't Spam

Your basic attack automatically leads into a combo you can easily rely on as your main attack. MultiVersus uses a damage reduction system that will eventually make your attacks deal less damage if you keep using them over and over. At that point, the smart move is to start mixing in different moves so you can keep fighting at full power.

MultiVersus Beginner's Guide: Tactics and TipsKnowing the Character Classes

The characters in MultiVersus give you a general idea of how they play and what role they take on in a fight. Some of these classes are ones we're used to seeing in other games: tanks, support, and assassins. Tanks are the toughest of these classes and are built to soak up damage. Support characters play a mix of offense and support for their teammate. How they help their teammates varies from character to character, so you need to learn what your support can do in order to know which moves to use and when to offer the best support. Bruisers are stronger versions of tanks. Assassins, meanwhile, are high-damage, low-health strikers. You need to keep tight control of your character's movement to land quick hits and kills while also staying out of danger.

Level Up as Soon as Possible

Unlike a Smash Bros. title, MultiVersus has a progression system for every character. You'll naturally start at level 1 with all of them. You'll gradually level up as you play more matches and earn XP. The starting roster is already fairly large, and more characters are on the way, so you'll want to find one you want to stick with early on and level them up as quickly as possible. Your character gains various perks as they level up. Unlocking all of your character's abilities won't just make them better — it'll also help you throughout the game.

Stacking Perks

The feature that sets MultiVersus apart from other Smash clones the most is that it's designed for 2v2 fights. You can play 1v1, but the primary mode is team play. Going back to character classes, you'll want to diversify which two roles you and your partner play. Stacking perks is also a feature unique to 2v2 matches. Perk stacking gives both you and your partner a buff based on the perks you have. So it can make sense to match up your perks with your teammate's.
