The 26/27 answer for an OSM 4-4-2B counter tactic is wing play: 4-3-3A at home, 4-3-3B away, and Wing play in both cases. For an evenly matched home game, the suggested starting point is Pressing 60, Style 65, Tempo 60.
These values come from OSM Next Level's 4-4-2 counter page (23 October 2026), a community tool; we have not tested them. The source treats 4-4-2A and 4-4-2B together, as a 4-4-2 playing Passing game.
How an opponent's 4-4-2B is usually set up

Knowing what the opponent will do helps before you build a counter. In the site tactics published by OSM Helper, every 4-4-2B setup is saved with Passing game. What they have in common:
| Setting | OSM Helper's 4-4-2B examples |
|---|---|
| Game plan | Passing game |
| Forwards | Attack only |
| Midfielders | Stay in position (Protect the defence in one example) |
| Defenders | Defend deep |
| Pressing | 45–65 |
| Style | 50–59 |
| Tempo | 55–60 |
So you will most likely face two flat banks of four, two strikers and a side that circulates the ball patiently with a "Neutral" style. Checking the opponent's real setup with the analyst before kick-off is still the safest approach.
OSM 4-4-2B counter tactic table (26/27)

| Venue | Your strength | Formation | Game plan | Pressing | Style | Tempo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home | Stronger | 4-3-3A | Wing play | 70 | 73 | 58 |
| Home | Even | 4-3-3A | Wing play | 60 | 65 | 60 |
| Home | Weaker | 4-3-3A | Wing play | 60 | 60 | 65 |
| Away | Stronger | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 76 | 64 | 74 |
| Away | Even | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 68 | 62 | 62 |
| Away | Weaker | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 56 | 61 | 52 |
In slider labels: pressing between 60 and 79 reads "Close down opposition", style between 60 and 79 reads "Attacking", tempo between 60 and 79 reads "High-speed passing". Away and weaker, tempo 52 drops into the "Play possession" band.
Line tactics and other settings

- Forwards: Attack only
- Midfielders: Protect the defence or Stay in position. OSM Next Level's six recommendations against 4-4-2 split three and three between them.
- Defenders: Defend deep
- Marking: Zonal marking. Four defenders against two strikers gives you two spare men.
- Offside trap: No. None of the source's recommendations against 4-4-2 switch it on.
- Tackling: Based on the referee; tone it down with orange and red referees.
Why the wings? The weak spot of 4-4-2B

The two flat banks of a 4-4-2 stay compact in the middle. With Passing game they build patiently through the centre and are hard to play through. Entering a passing contest in midfield means playing the game they want.
The source's reading is this: in a 4-4-2 the full-backs need to stay narrow to keep the flat back four intact. If you overload the flanks with three forwards, either the full-backs get dragged wide and the centre and half-spaces open up, or your winger is left free. On top of that, a 4-3-3's three central midfielders give you a spare man against a 4-4-2's two.
Playing four defenders against two strikers is comfortable at the back too. Zonal marking keeps that numerical edge, and you have no reason to risk an offside trap.
Variations for venue and strength gap
The most striking row is away and stronger: Pressing 76, Tempo 74. The idea is to move the ball fast and never let their banks of four settle. At home the table prefers 4-3-3A; its attacking midfielder adds one more attacker to open a compact block.
- You are stronger: High pressing and style; pin them in their own half.
- Even match: 60/65/60 at home, 68/62/62 away. Balanced, but never giving up width.
- You are weaker: 56/61/52 away. Tempo drops and turnovers fall. The source's view is that width still pulls their shape apart even when you are the weaker side.
Across OSM Next Level's data, the average pressing against 4-4-2 is 65 and the average tempo 62. That tempo is clearly higher than what it suggests against shoot-on-sight shapes such as 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1.
What changed since our 2023 guide?
Our 2023 4-4-2B counter tactic guide recommended Shoot on sight, a "One-touch football" tempo and an offensive mentality. The 26/27 community data prefers Wing play, and a 52–65 tempo in most situations. The structure of the tactics screen has not changed.
Keep OSM's official advice in mind as well: there is no single best tactic, so test in friendlies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which formation should I use against 4-4-2B in OSM?
