The short answer to the OSM 4-3-3B counter tactic question: in the 26/27 season, community tools most often answer it with a 4-3-3 of your own and Wing play. At home against an evenly matched side, Pressing 67, Style 70 and Tempo 54 is a solid starting point.

We did not test these numbers ourselves. They come from the 4-3-3B counter tactic table of OSM Next Level, a community tool, updated on 23 October 2026. Below you will find the values for every venue and strength gap, the line tactics, and the reasoning behind the setup.

OSM 4-3-3B counter tactic table (26/27)

The table assumes your opponent lines up in 4-3-3B with Wing play. "Strength" describes your squad compared with theirs.

Venue Strength Formation Game plan Pressing Style Tempo
Home Stronger 4-3-3A Passing game 70 74 62
Home Even 4-3-3B Wing play 67 70 54
Home Weaker 4-3-3B Wing play 48 62 65
Away Stronger 4-3-3B Wing play 70 74 65
Away Even 4-3-3B Wing play 68 69 54
Away Weaker 4-3-3B Wing play 65 63 48

In the game, these slider values map to labels. Pressing between 60 and 79 reads "Close down opposition", Style between 60 and 79 reads "Attacking", and Tempo between 40 and 59 reads "Play possession". So the even-match setup is a side that presses close, thinks about attacking and still keeps the ball moving without rushing.

Other settings: line tactics, marking, offside trap

OSM tactics screen: Passing game, Normal tackling; Drop deep, Protect the defence and Defend deep line tactics
  • Forwards: Attack only
  • Midfielders: Protect the defence in most scenarios, Stay in position in some. Four of OSM Next Level's six recommendations against 4-3-3 A/B use Protect the defence.
  • Defenders: Defend deep
  • Marking: Zonal marking
  • Offside trap: No
  • Tackling: Depends on the referee. Aggressive is fine with green and blue referees; Normal or Careful is safer with orange and red ones.

The marking choice follows a simple rule. Your opponent has three forwards and you have four defenders. That spare defender lets zonal marking hold the shape. Man marking only becomes necessary when your defenders do not outnumber their forwards. As for the offside trap, the same source switches it on in just 2 of its 54 recommendations, and never against a 4-3-3.

Strengths and weaknesses of 4-3-3B

OSM squad screen showing the Manchester City player list and line-up on the pitch

4-3-3B uses four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. According to OSM Next Level's guide, the B version has a defensive midfielder in the middle of the three, while the A version uses an attacking midfielder there. B protects the back four; A adds an extra attacker to unlock packed defences.

Strength Weakness
Three forwards stretch the pitch Space opens behind the full-backs once they push up
Keeps the ball in midfield for long spells Patient build-up gives a compact defence time to reset
Very effective at home with a stronger squad Gets pinned back by a side that takes the flanks first

Why this counter works

4-3-3B relies on full-backs joining the attack. If you attack down the wings yourself, two things happen. First, their full-backs are forced to stay home. Second, whenever they do step forward, your wide forwards run into the space they leave behind. The source's own note says the same: the side that attacks the flanks first tends to own them.

Setting your midfield to Protect the defence keeps bodies in front of your back four against their midfield trio. A medium tempo cuts down on cheap turnovers, which matters because a side playing Wing play can turn a quick loss of possession straight into a counter.

Adjusting for home, away and strength gap

Most of the variation in the table comes from squad strength, not venue. OSM Next Level's pressing guide says its engine averages 66 pressing when you are stronger and 59 when you are weaker, while home and away differ by only one point.

  • You are stronger: Style rises to 74 and pressing towards 70. The goal is to pin them in their own half. At home, switching to 4-3-3A with Passing game is also on the list.
  • Even match: Pressing and style in the 67–70 band, tempo 54. Balanced, but attack-minded.
  • You are weaker, away: Style 63, tempo 48. A lower tempo means fewer turnovers and a tidier shape.
  • You are weaker, at home: Pressing drops to 48 and tempo rises to 65, aiming to break quickly without leaving space.

If the opponent is far stronger and you only want to scrape a point, a more defensive plan is an option. Among OSM Helper's site tactics there is a 5-4-1B with Shoot on sight at Pressing 39, Style 29, Tempo 59, flagged for every situation. It is not specific to 4-3-3B, so treat it as a general damage-limitation setup.

What changed since our 2024 guide?

The tactics screen itself has the same building blocks: five game plans, line tactics for three lines, marking, the offside trap, tackling and the Pressing/Style/Tempo sliders. What changed is the advice. Our 2024 counter tactics guide for 4-3-3A and 4-3-3B leaned on 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-1-1. The 26/27 community data instead suggests meeting the opponent on the flanks with the same weapon. The 75–85 pressing and "One-touch football" tempo found in older guides are also above today's recommended ranges.

OSM's official help page states there is no single best tactic and suggests testing tactics in friendlies. Checking your opponent's formation with the analyst before kick-off and running the setup in a friendly is the quickest way to adapt these numbers to your own squad.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best formation against 4-3-3B in OSM?

In the 26/27 community data, the most common answer is 4-3-3B with Wing play. At home with a stronger squad, 4-3-3A with Passing game is also recommended. None of them guarantees a win.

Should I use the offside trap against 4-3-3B?

It is not recommended. None of OSM Next Level's six recommendations against 4-3-3 has the trap switched on. If it fails, a forward is through on goal.

Zonal marking or man marking?

Zonal marking, because your four defenders face three forwards. One spare defender is enough to keep the shape.

Will these values win every match?

No. They are recommendations from a community tool. Squad strength, the referee and your opponent's exact settings all change the outcome. Try the setup in a friendly and fine-tune it for your squad.
