Cypher, the agent who joined VALORANT from Morocco, has become a sentinel many players want to play. He's an agent we could call a must-pick, one you could say should be on every team even if Killjoy isn't. With that being the case, most players research how to play Cypher better and what VALORANT Cypher tactics look like. We've put together a guide to answer these questions. What Are VALORANT Cypher's Abilities?

Cypher, like every other VALORANT Agent, comes equipped with four abilities. Two of his abilities must be purchased with credits (basic abilities), one is given for free at the start of every round (Signature Ability), and the other is earned by gathering points (Ultimate Ability).

C Ability — Trapwire (200 Credits):

This ability is an invisible tripwire. It's an ability that opponents can't pass through these points without triggering it, marking them even if they try. If an opponent moves through it too fast, they won't be able to see the trap. But if an opponent approaches it slowly, they can break it without getting caught. But don't forget! When it's destroyed, you'll get a callout saying "my trap was destroyed." Also, if you die, your traps get disabled.

Q Ability — Cyber Cage (100 Credits):

This ability can act somewhat like a smoke. It can let you pass through places invisibly that you otherwise couldn't. This ability also has a nice feature. If opponents get caught in this cage or try to pass through it, it makes a sound. This sound lets us know opponents are near us. To activate this cage, you need to press F or whatever activation key you've set.

E Ability — Spycam (1 free):

This ability is a camera. You can watch everything happening where you place it live, yourself. Also, while in the camera, if you spot an opponent, aim at them and press Mouse1 to fire a dart at them. This dart will reveal their location as long as the opponent doesn't remove it from themselves. This ability is a signature ability. If an opponent destroys this camera, you can throw it again 45 seconds later. Want to take back the camera because you threw it in the wrong spot? Press F, and you can place it wherever you want again after 15 seconds.

X (Ultimate) Ability — Neural Theft (6 Points):

Our agent's ultimate ability is a type of ability used for vision purposes. You can use this ability on a recently killed opponent. After killing an opponent yourself, or after a teammate kills one, if you go to the body and press X, the locations of all your opponents will be revealed shortly after.

How Should You Play VALORANT Cypher?

Cypher's strengths definitely apply to defense. With his camera and traps, you won't have to stick your head out and risk getting shot down just to get information. Before the round starts, take some time to set up some traps and cages, since the enemy can't hear you setting them up. Then, when they inevitably walk into them, you'll have instant vision for an easy kill.

So if Cypher is this well-suited to defense, what happens on the attacking side? Don't let the agent's Sentinel style fool you, since Cypher can be equally effective on offense. Use your traps at the start of a round to make sure no annoying defender tries to flank a lane. Especially if you're going to enter a site area, you absolutely need to leave a trap behind you. Otherwise, your chances of getting flanked are quite high. It's a win-win: either you catch them for easy intel, or they shoot it, which gives away their position, or they're forced to turn back.

Cypher's traps are also a perfect device for holding a site area. Placing a trap to cut off access points to the bomb can be a simple way to keep a ninja defuse from happening unnoticed.

The tactics we're about to give you are examples of defense. The videos you're about to watch are the trap, cage, and camera placements I personally use on the Ascent and Split maps. I personally recommend using this method. But there's something I want to point out. While these tactics are entirely personal, your own tactics and your own placements might be better.
