Bandai Namco Is Building a Gundam Metaverse

Bandai Namco has announced that it's developing a Gundam Metaverse that will span a wide range of formats, including video games, anime, and even Gunpla. First hinted at in a mid-year report earlier last month, Bandai Namco used today's Third Gundam Conference to finally confirm the existence of its Gundam metaverse initiative, calling it "a platform of opportunities for Gundam fans around the world to come together, chat, and connect in various ways."

What Is the Gundam Metaverse?

The Gundam Metaverse will take place across multiple virtual communities that will connect to a central hub to build Bandai Namco's unified vision. Categories will include anime, music, video games, plastic model kits, and more, each modeled after the franchise's space colonies. One example would be letting Gunpla fans scan their model kits and pit them against each other, similar to the popular show Gundam Build Fighters.

Bandai Namco hopes third-party companies will join its vision for Gundam, one where "character rights are protected," and will allow future content on the IP's metaverse to be "co-created with fans." The company plans to achieve much of this through a model that will let fans interact and transact directly with each other, similar to how users do on websites like eBay.

"Metaverse" has become a major tech buzzword since Facebook rebranded as "Meta" in 2021. It stems from growing interest in virtual spaces, driven by the increasing adoption of cheap VR headsets. This push has been met with mixed reactions, if only because it already seems crowded with games like Fortnite, but that hasn't stopped dozens of companies, including the likes of Apple and Microsoft, from announcing their own metaverse plans in recent months.

Alongside the Gundam Metaverse, the Third Gundam Conference also included the announcement of the new anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, which is set to begin airing in October 2022. The show will air on Sundays at 5:00 PM on NBS/TBS 28 stations in Japan, with simulcasts planned for other regions. A prequel simply titled "PROLOGUE" is planned for release this summer.
