As football evolves, full-backs have become one of the most important positions. With their forward runs and overlaps, the support they give to midfield play and passing, and the surprise runs into the box that create chances... full-backs contribute to the game in so many different ways that their importance in 2023 football is huge. Big as it is, developing a full-back is very hard, especially since the position demands two-way play and is very prone to physical wear. If finding a good full-back is hard, finding a full-back with potential can be even harder.

Although what I'm talking about applies to real life, since games try to mirror real life as closely as possible, that same reality carries over to FIFA and other football games. Signing and developing players with potential and building them into your squad is important across the board, but doing it at full-back is even more important. Career Mode players struggle most to find good options at full-back, and in this article we'll focus on the right-back spot.

Before we get into the best young right-back talents, one note worth making: the game is still far from release, so we have no information yet about likely prices.

Until people get used to the new name, we'll refer to the game as FIFA 24 even though it's technically FC24. Once the name has properly settled in, we'll go back to writing FC24 in our articles.

Who Are the Young Right-Back Talents in FIFA 24?

I should mention that the young right-backs I'll name here were chosen based on how they've performed this season and by projecting what they could achieve next season.

Since we have no information about the players' potential ratings yet, I'm working from FIFA 23 as a reference point.

NOTE: No player born before 2003 has been included in this list.

Malo Gusto (OVR 77 - POT 89)

• Club: Olympique Lyonnais
• Position: RB, LB, RM
• Nationality: France
• Age: May 19, 2003 (19)

Gusto, who moved to Chelsea mid-season for a €30 million transfer fee, was loaned straight back to his old club without making an appearance. Although he's the player with the most potential on this list, the injury he suffered could set his performance back. It's still a big question mark what will happen and how much playing time he'll get once he returns to Chelsea at the end of the season, but if he stays fit and injury-free he should be able to get regular minutes at a mid-table club, and he'll only be 20 next year. I don't expect much of a jump in his current rating, but I expect his potential to land around 88.

Arnau Martínez (OVR 76 - POT 87)

• Position: RB, LB, RWB
• Nationality: Spain
• Age: April 25, 2003 (19)

Martínez, who carried last season's minutes in the lower division straight into LaLiga this year, could be one of the most promising right-backs in FIFA 24. Given his regular playing time at Girona and the performances he's shown, it wouldn't surprise anyone to see him at a much better club next year. Between his role at Girona, his pace, his tempo, his composure on the ball and his positive contribution to attack, he'll be a first pick for Career Mode players. His already usable base rating should also help his rapid development, and I expect him to see a minimum potential rating of 87.

Devyne Rensch (OVR 77 - POT 86)

• Position: RB, LB
• Nationality: Netherlands
• Age: January 18, 2003 (20)

You might be tired of seeing him on lists like this, but he's still only 20 and still has very high potential. He hasn't quite lived up to the hype he had when he first broke through, but next season, i.e. FIFA 24, could be an important year for him. If he performs well enough to move to a bigger club, Rensch could take another step up; if not, he could stay right where he is. He's featured in 22 league matches this season (as of writing), which is more than in past seasons, so I expect him to start the game with a better rating than in FIFA 23, along with a correspondingly higher potential rating.

Other Young Right-Back Recommendations for FIFA 24

Martim Fernandes (OVR 58 - 80)

• Club: Porto B
• Position: RB
• Nationality: Portugal
• Age: January 18, 2006 (17)

Martim Fernandes, who spent the season with Porto B in Portugal's second division, is one of the young right-backs the club and the wider public expect a lot from because of his potential. It's not certain he'll actually be in FIFA 24, but given how much his name comes up, I expect EA to include him. Since he hasn't even played many matches for Porto B, I expect his base rating to be low, but his potential rating could start at a minimum of around 80. We could also see it climb higher depending on how he performs next year.

Owen Gene (OVR 65 - 84)

• Club: Amiens
• Position: RWB
• Nationality: France
• Age: March 19, 2003 (20)

Owen Gene, who's been getting regular minutes at Amiens this season and improving with every game, should be a good option for anyone looking for an attacking full-back or Career Mode players playing a back five. I expect Gene to start the game with a better card than in FIFA 23, and his potential rating could push toward the mid-80s.
