Another new football game has recently joined the list of upcoming football titles. GOALS, announced by a Stockholm-based studio, will enter open beta testing on Steam next September. The developer has released a gameplay trailer!

Will GOALS Be Free?

Yes, GOALS is shaping up to be a gameplay-focused, free-to-play, cross-play, multiplayer-focused football game that's esports ready.

However, a valid platform account and a subscription (sold separately) may be required to play Goals. The game includes optional in-game purchases of virtual currency that can be used to acquire in-game items, including random selections of in-game items.

Can GOALS Rival EA FC?

The game will lean more toward arcade gameplay. As you can tell from the released gameplay video, the playstyle looks arcade-like. One of the game's boldest claims is that it won't suffer from input lag. In other words, players will be able to pass and shoot without experiencing reaction delays. By letting you carry out what's on your mind moment to moment, GOALS might try to become a rival to EA FC on this front. On the other hand, based on the information available so far, the game doesn't have any other distinct game modes. In that respect, it's not on a level to rival EA FC. Also, the game doesn't focus much on graphics, and club licenses and player licenses won't be included. The fact that the game is free stands out as a plus.

Honestly, I'd compare it to a 3D version of Haxball. So rather than being an alternative for EA FC players, the game seems more likely to appeal to Haxball players. As you know, Haxball is still a game with an active community that people enjoy spending time with. On top of that, another claim GOALS makes is that it will have an active presence in esports. That would create an opportunity for players who think they're good at the game to showcase themselves. We don't think this game will become an alternative to EA FC, because in our view the two games with real potential to be alternatives to EA FC are UFL and MOTM. We especially think these two games will compete with EA FC because they show similarities across many aspects, including graphics, gameplay mechanics, and even the content-maintenance side. GOALS, on the other hand, is set to be a major point of interest for Haxball fans.

Will It Support Cross-Play?

The game will be playable on Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation, and Xbox. The playtest has only launched on Windows, Mac, and Linux so far.

Will It Be Multiplayer?

It will be a game where you can dive into an exciting 1v1 mode or team up with friends in a fast-paced 5v5 mode.
