4A Games released the update on October 29, with better visuals, lighting and controller features too. The timing makes sense: Metro 2039 launches on February 4, 2027.

What has changed visually?

It is not just about frame rate. According to Xbox Wire, both games get more detailed textures, a refined lighting and shadow system, richer environmental detail and better animation.

4A Games says it tuned every change carefully to keep the look and feel of the original games. The series has a passionate following built over 16 years, and the update is designed to respect that.

Impulse Trigger support

The update adds full support for the Xbox controller's Impulse Triggers, using feedback in the triggers to raise the tension. Xbox Ally and Ally X owners also get full support and optimisation.

Do your old saves carry over?

No, and that matters. Pure Xbox notes that previous saves won't carry over when you move to the Xbox Series X|S version, so you'll need to start a new game.

There is good news for disc owners, though. Pure Xbox says both games support the Xbox Disc to Digital programme, so you should be able to upgrade a physical copy by inserting the disc and claiming the digital licence.

How to install the update

  1. Press Y on the Xbox dashboard.
  2. Search for "Metro Redux".
  3. Find and install the Xbox Series X|S version of each game.

Key fixes in the patch notes

The patch notes are long. Some of the fixes highlighted by Pure Xbox include:

  • A black screen when resuming from suspend on Xbox Series X|S
  • Crashes and graphical corruption after Quick Resume
  • A crash when picking up a gas mask
  • Enemies spotting the player through darkness and walls
  • The weapon getting stuck reloading after burning cobwebs
  • Infinite loading screens on newer AMD hardware and in Xbox One X backward compatibility
  • No more checkpoints when your gas mask filter is almost empty

The notes also list PC fixes, including crashes on Windows 11 and AMD GPUs, and Steam Cloud not uploading save data.

A good time to catch up before Metro 2039

Xbox Wire says more than 50 million players have played the Metro series since the first game in 2010. With Metro 2039 out on February 4, 2027, this is an easy way to catch up.
