The 26/27 community answer for an OSM 4-5-1 counter tactic: go around the crowded midfield, not through it. All six scenarios recommend 4-3-3B with Wing play; for an even home game, start at Pressing 68, Style 71, Tempo 51.
The values come from OSM Next Level's 4-5-1 page (23 October 2026), a community tool; we have not tested them. Below are the table, the settings and the reasons 4-5-1 opens up on the flanks.
How an opponent's 4-5-1 is set up

4-5-1 lines up five midfielders behind a lone striker. OSM Next Level treats it as a formation that plays Shoot on sight. The 4-5-1 examples among OSM Helper's site tactics point the same way:
| Setting | OSM Helper's 4-5-1 examples |
|---|---|
| Game plan | Shoot on sight |
| Forwards | Support midfield |
| Midfielders | Stay in position or Protect the defence |
| Defenders | Defend deep |
| Pressing / Style / Tempo | Pressing 19–55, Style 7–39, Tempo 37–69 |
So you usually face a deep, low-style side that blocks the middle and shoots from distance when it gets the chance.
OSM 4-5-1 counter tactic table (26/27)

| Venue | Your strength | Formation | Game plan | Pressing | Style | Tempo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home | Stronger | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 70 | 74 | 67 |
| Home | Even | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 68 | 71 | 51 |
| Home | Weaker | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 60 | 60 | 52 |
| Away | Stronger | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 70 | 74 | 59 |
| Away | Even | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 64 | 70 | 54 |
| Away | Weaker | 4-3-3B | Wing play | 60 | 60 | 51 |
Tempo stands out here. Apart from the home-and-stronger scenario, it stays between 51 and 59, the "Play possession" band. According to OSM Next Level's tempo guide, its engine lowers tempo against back-four sides that shoot on sight; the average against 4-5-1 is 56, compared with 63–68 against back fives.
Line tactics, marking and offside trap

- Forwards: Attack only
- Midfielders: Protect the defence. All six of OSM Next Level's recommendations against 4-5-1 use it.
- Defenders: Defend deep
- Marking: Zonal marking. Four defenders against one striker leaves three spare men.
- Offside trap: No. According to the source, a shoot-on-sight side does not run in behind, so the trap only adds risk.
- Tackling: Based on the referee's colour.
Why 4-3-3B and the flanks?

4-5-1's strength is numbers in the middle. Five midfielders clog the centre and control the tempo. In the source's words, that midfield only wins if you agree to play through it. When Wing play moves the ball wide, some of those five are forced to shift out.
Its weak spot is up front. The lone striker gets no support, because all five midfielders are needed to hold the central block. Once you are wide, their back four gets almost no help.
4-3-3B's defensive midfielder also screens the back four against long-range shots from their midfield. OSM Next Level chooses the B variant in every scenario against 4-5-1 and 5-3-2, reasoning that cover in front of the defence matters more than an extra attacker.
Why not sit back?
The most common mistake against a shoot-on-sight side is crowding your own box and handing them the ball. The explanation on the same source's 4-2-3-1 page applies to 4-5-1 too: the way to cut off the long-range threat is to take the ball off them and deny space in front of the box. That is why pressing never drops below 60 in the table.
Adjusting for venue and strength
- Home, stronger: 70/74/67. One of the source's most trusted scenarios; punish the lone-striker setup with explosive wing play.
- Even: 68/71/51 at home, 64/70/54 away. High style, medium tempo.
- Weaker: 60/60/51–52 home and away. Pressing and style sit at the bottom of the "Close down opposition" and "Attacking" bands.
If the opponent's 4-5-1 sits deep against you, be patient. A quick loss of possession is exactly what a long-range shooting side wants.
What changed since our older guide
Since our 2023 4-5-1 counter tactic guide, the components of the tactics screen have not changed; what has changed is the community's view of tempo and pressing. The 26/27 data suggests a medium tempo and wing play against 4-5-1. OSM's official help advice still applies: test your tactics in friendlies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which formation should I use against 4-5-1 in OSM?
The 26/27 community data recommends 4-3-3B with Wing play in all six scenarios. It is a recommendation, not a guaranteed result.
Why is tempo low against 4-5-1?
OSM Next Level's engine lowers tempo against back-four sides that shoot on sight. The aim is to lose the ball less and deny long-range chances.
Does the offside trap work against 4-5-1?
It is not recommended. A side that shoots from distance does not run in behind, so the trap does nothing and adds risk if it fails.
Do I need man marking against 4-5-1?
No. With four defenders against one striker, zonal marking is enough.
