What Is Reddit r/Place?

In short, r/Place is a special subreddit with a blank canvas made up of tiny white pixel grids. Reddit users can place colored pixels on the blank canvas once every five minutes to create a giant collective artwork.

The subreddit was Reddit's April Fools' Day experience back in 2017 and became wildly popular, which is why it's back. In fact, the company says it's one of its most popular April Fools' Day experiences.

According to the company, more than a million Redditors took part in creating the shared digital artwork in 2017. Over 16 million pixels were placed, resulting in a massive image. The concept behind r/Place is to showcase the power of online communities working toward a common goal.

What makes r/Place even more interesting is that it was created by Josh Wardle, the same developer behind the viral word game Wordle.

How Does Reddit r/Place Work?

The concept behind r/Place is quite simple. Reddit provides a giant 1000x1000 tile canvas made up of tiny blank pixels, and any logged-in user can place a tile or pixel of their choosing. You're free to use a pixel or tile of any color you like. The only restriction is that you can only place one tile or pixel every five minutes.

The canvas grows in real time since it allows any logged-in Reddit user to take part. Even if you don't use Reddit or you're logged out of the platform, you can still watch how things unfold. The only restriction is that you won't be able to take part — you'll just be watching from the sidelines.
