FM22 Best Tactics: Top 5 Meta Formations (December 2021)

If you play Football Manager 2022 with the wrong tactic, hard times have begun for you. So we have prepared a guide of the best tactics that fit the meta right now, with which you can have the highest success rate. In Football Manager 2022 (FM22), look at your players first.

What Are the Best Tactics That Fit the Meta in Football Manager (FM) 2022?

Considering all of this, let's look at the best five tactics you can use in Football Manager 2022...

FM 22: 5-2-3 – Vertical Tiki-Taka

Having five at the back is a big help to you in defence, and it will almost certainly work for a big side.

If they can't find a way past the opposition defence, you will definitely need players who can hold the ball and keep it moving.

You can have wide centre-backs, one of this year's new features, which provide support to the midfield, so it turns into something similar to a 4-3-3 with a midfield.

In midfield, you need at least one defensive-minded player, and we also recommend having a deep-lying playmaker who can carry the ball forward.

You also need a striker who can score again and again. This formation works especially well for a team like Tottenham, with Harry Kane at the tip of the spear.

FM 22: 4-2-3-1 – Gegenpress

If you played FM21, you know how good the 4-2-3-1 is; in possession, the players attack all together like Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, and out of possession your players suffocate the opponent, just like Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool!

The most important thing for using this tactic is having a squad that can keep up high aggression and high stamina until the final whistle.

A team like Borussia Dortmund or Liverpool will naturally succeed in this formation, but you can also easily use it for a club full of very young players with high potential, like Aston Villa!

FM 22: 4-4-2 – Fast Counter-Attack

This is a tactical approach you can use for teams at the bottom of the table or in a match where you want to go out defensively.

If you are aiming to avoid relegation, this will probably be the ideal one for you.

If, next to two strikers with high physical quality and aerial dominance, you also have two fast wingers who can cross well and have high dribbling ability, you have built a good setup.

It is important that the two players in the middle of midfield are of the type that can quickly send the team on the attack after winning the ball back.

Playing the team in wide areas is the formula for success in this tactic.

FM22: 3-3-2-2 – Fortress

Build up play through your three centre-backs. It is important that at least one of them is comfortable on the ball and a good passer. But if you want high success, it would be better for your right and left centre-backs to build play well.

Then, having two wing-backs on the same line as the defensive midfielder will turn your defence into a fortress.

Then play with two midfielders who can go both ways and influence every aspect of the game. You will want them to have high stamina, high aggression and high technical ability, and a high passing ability is very important.

Your central midfielders being your team's best players will positively affect your success rate.

The great thing about this tactic is that you outnumber the opponent when they have the ball, and if you lose it, a goal from a counter-attack or a quick organized attack will bring you a point or points. If you score the first goal, it will be really hard for the opponent to get past that defence.

Tactically, it is similar to gegenpress: quick transitions, fast pressing and an extremely high-tempo game will carry you forward, and you will aim to draw the opponent into the centre as much as possible and win the ball in the crowded area.

In attack, build up calmly from the back with short passes and make sure you play your team in a disciplined way. When you lose the ball, surprise your opponent with sudden pressure.
