FM 22: Best Corner Tactics for Scoring Goals

Scoring goals in FM 22 can sometimes be very easy, but it gets much harder once your team loses control and things start going wrong. A goal from a set piece in a big match can quickly turn a manager from someone on the hot seat into someone getting praised. When people think of corners, Capone — nicknamed ‘far-post Capone’ — is one of the first names that comes to mind, having made a huge contribution to Galatasaray's UEFA Cup run and four straight league titles with goals from corners. In this article, where we cover how you can score from corners just like Capone, and in other ways too, we'll share tips for scoring goals from corners no matter the method.

Set pieces are often overlooked by Football Manager players, but a good tactic can help you unlock the game in a lot of matches.

We spent some good time in Football Manager 2022 and found a few ways to score goals from corners for you. Make sure the player you're aiming the ball at is your team's best header of the ball or tallest player, and that the player taking the corner is your team's best corner-kick taker.

FM 22 Corner Tactic: Attack the Near Post!

For this corner tactic, set your best header of the ball to make a run to the near post, then place another player at the far post. Tell the player taking the corner to aim the cross at the near post, and add a few more decoy runs to the same spot.

This tactic works because the near post is the most comfortable area inside the 6-yard box, and it's usually ideal for one of your players to get there before the opposing defender. Having someone at the far post will also let you score into an empty net off a rebound, just like Capone used to do.

FM 22 Corner Tactic: Start With a Short Pass!

The short-pass corner tactic, which didn't work very well in FM 21, seems to be back in FM 2022.

This tactic is very simple: set the corner taker's player instructions to short pass, then have your best crosser of the ball come in close. That player will then dribble and cross from a better position.

Taking short corners — something that also works in other football games, with FIFA 22 being the closest example — can be genuinely devastating, especially against opponents who play man-marking defense. You want the player receiving the pass to deliver a good cross, make sure the player they're crossing to is your team's best header of the ball, and have that player meet the ball centrally. If you don't want the meeting point to be central, make sure you've placed the right players to attack both posts.

This corner tactic in FM 2022 works because it throws the opposing defense's shape way off, and you can find goals far easier than you'd expect.

As with all corner tactics, being realistic, these won't help you score in every match. Also switch between tactics. Remember, this is a game, and unfortunately you don't have the option to finish the whole season with just one tactic. Don't be afraid to try new things and experiment with different tactics.
