Ever since the music industry has existed, there have been surprise collaborations that artists' fans never expected. For example, at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, we got Celine Dion and Lindsey Stirling together for a legendary cover performance of Queen's The Show Must Go On. Two years later, Maroon 5 gave us a collaboration with SZA for their single What Lovers Do. These mashups, and the others that followed or preceded them, let fans imagine what it would be like for some of their favorite artists to come together and give the performance of their lives. Now Spotify has given fans in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines the chance to do exactly that with Supergrouper, a new feature exclusive to the Spotify mobile app.

What Is Spotify Supergrouper?

A supergroup is like fantasy football: only you get to play music director, and you can form a band of any size with your favorite artists, no matter what kind of music they make, or whether they have retired from their music careers or passed away. Let's start building your dream superstar band.

How Do You Find Spotify Supergrouper?

When you first open Spotify, the Supergrouper banner should be shown on the home page. If it isn't there, you can find it using your phone's web browser.

  • Open the web browser on your smartphone.
  • Visit the Spotify Supergrouper website.
  • Tap Connect to Spotify and follow the instructions to link your Spotify account.

How Do You Use Spotify Supergrouper?

After you find the Supergrouper option in the Spotify app or visit the web page, you're ready to start.

  • First, choose the group size. You can choose a minimum of three and a maximum of five artists. Despite Supergrouper's impressive name, we can't make the group as big as BTS (seven members).
  • Choose the artists and their roles. The roles appear at the top of the artist search bar, and you can tap the shuffle symbol to choose The Lead, The Up-And-Comer, The Producer, The Legend, The Hypeman, The Polymath, The Rockstar, The Lyricist, The Trendsetter and The Wildcard.
  • Assign your favorite artists to each role. For example, I chose Hikaru Utada as The Lead, Celine Dion as The Lyricist, Avril Lavigne as The Wildcard, Megan Thee Stallion as The Up-And-Comer and Mariah Carey as The Producer.

If you're having trouble thinking of any good artists to choose for your Supergroup, tap Random and let Spotify pick them for you. The artists it picks are based only on your listening habits (just like how it shows your top artists of the year in your Spotify Wrapped). They may be better picks than you initially thought.

  • Name your group. Tap Choose Name at the bottom of the screen and you will be taken to a page where you are given a list of words and phrases to choose from. The words are chosen by Spotify's algorithm and are based on the artists' descriptions, original nicknames and/or the names of their songs.

Create your faded Name tag; it may seem like you could type a custom name, but no matter how much you tap on it, you can't.

For my Utada-led Supergroup, I chose the name "The Queens Crew". That makes sense because each artist in the group has been described in some way as the queens of their own genres. Utada is called the Queen of J-Pop, while Mariah Carey is referred to as the Queen of Christmas because of her song All I Want For Christmas Is You. Although Avril Lavigne keeps the title of Pop Punk Princess.

  • When you finish naming your Supergroup, Spotify will create a playlist of songs made by the artists in the group. At first, you will see 20 to 30 songs in the playlist. Some are songs you may have heard before, others will be completely new to you, which is why the word "mix" is automatically added to the playlist name.

When you scroll down to the more recommended songs column, you can add more songs to the playlist by the same artists or by other artists whose music is associated with them.

  • If you don't like the name you chose in Supergrouper, go to the options menu and tap Edit to change the name to something you wanted to type but couldn't because the feature didn't give you that option in the first place. Finally, whatever name you type, the original name stays on the private playlist card that your friends and family can see when you share your playlist with them.
